JOHNATHAN Thurston could be a surprise starter as the Cowboys aim to defend their Auckland Nines crown.
Thurston missed the Four Nations with a shoulder injury and was expected not to be risked in the Nines.
But he has been training well and sources say coach Paul Green wants to use his star playmaker.
“The club is very keen to defend the title we won in the Nines and having JT on board would be a huge boost,” the source said.
