MATCH REPORT: Milford stars but injury sours win
Anthony Milford deserves to be back in the Origin discussion, James Roberts earns a Red Hill career reprieve, and the other things we learned from the Broncos v Sea Eagles Magic Round clash with Peter Badel.
MILF HUNTING ORIGIN JERSEY
1. Anthony Milford has to be considered by Queensland selectors for Origin I. Milford was Queensland’s No.14 utility for Origin I last season and while he is the forgotten man, the Maroons’ injury crisis opens the door for him. Milford scored a solo try in the first half and terrorised Manly by kicking a 40-20 and setting up two tries with grubbers after the break.
BRONCOS CHARTER THE JET AGAIN
2. James Roberts may have received a career reprieve at the Broncos. The Jet was axed by Anthony Seibold for the Manly clash but a possible ACL injury to his replacement Jack Bird has opened the door for Roberts. If Bird is out for the season, this will be the clear air Roberts needs to become Brisbane’s No.1 centre again.
LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYD
3. Broncos skipper Darius Boyd silenced his critics with his best performance of the season. While he was guilty of a poor defensive read for Manly’s opening try, Boyd hit back with some superb high-ball defusal. He threw a sublime pass for Corey Oates’ try and killed off the Sea Eagles when he won the race to a Milford grubber.
GIANT PAYNE IN THE HAAS
4. Broncos rookie prop Payne Haas is a freak. The 19-year-old destroyed the Sea Eagles, charging for 236 metres from 20 hit-ups. He received able support from front-row cohort Matt Lodge who amassed 190 metres.
ROLLED GOLD OATES
5. Brisbane winger Corey Oates must be the first winger picked for the Queensland Origin team. He ran for 219 metres and is 44th-minute four-pointer represented his 50th try at Suncorp Stadium. No man has scored more tries at Suncorp.
