Steve Renouf picks his Brisbane Broncos team of the decade

Of the 100 players that represented the Broncos in the past decade, just 14 played more than 100 games. And it’s that sort of loyalty that Steve Renouf has rewarded in his Team of the Decade.

Steve Renouf played for Brisbane at a time when loyalty was a cornerstone of the club’s great success and he has used that criteria when picking his Broncos’ Team of the Decade.

“I know that the club has some great young forwards at the moment but when I was picking my pack I went for longevity and what they have done for the club,” he said.

“For that reason I couldn’t leave out Alex Glenn or Matt Gillett. I think the young blokes would understand that. Their time will come.”

Renouf, who scored a record 142 tries in 183 games at centre for the Broncos in 1988-1999, struggled over two positions in his backline – halfback and winger.

“The two main halfbacks in that period were Peter Wallace and Ben Hunt. I like Peter Wallace. I liked the way he played. I thought he was a great player so I’ve gone with him,” he said.

“Ben has played hooker for Queensland and Australia so he’s an obvious choice on the bench.”

Based on his policy of rewarding players for long service, Renouf went for 128-game veteran Jack Reed ahead of James Roberts who played 79 games for the club in the centres, but that left him in a quandary over what to do with Israel Folau, who left after just one season to play AFL.

“I know Izzy played most of his games for the Broncos in the centres but I looked at him as a winger because that’s where he first made his name for the Storm,” he said.

“To be honest there wasn’t much between Jharal Yow Yeh and Izzy. They were both great players but for different reasons they both left the Broncos too early.

“I’ve gone for Jharal because if it wasn’t for that terrible injury he would have stayed with the club and I think he would have become one of the real greats.”

Renouf said coming up with the side gave him new respect for selectors.

“When I sat down to do it I thought it would be easy but it was a bit harder than I expected,” he said.

“I wouldn’t want to be doing it for real.”
