THE Broncos should stop signing journeymen and veterans and go after the biggest names on the market if they are to remain a force in the NRL.
That’s what Courier-Mail chief rugby league writer Peter Badel has told this week’s Colman’s Call podcast following stinging criticism of the club’s signing of Benji Marshall by former champion centre Steve Renouf.
“Steve has some concerns about Wayne Bennett and where he’s taking the club. He’s specifically worried about the signing of Benji Marshall and what that means for the Broncos moving forward. He thinks that’s a joke,” Badel told Colman’s Call.
“I have some concerns about where Brisbane is headed as a club as well. Big clubs need big players and big personalities, don’t they. They should be signing the Dylan Napas.
“The Broncos brand is such that if there is a player on the market that they want, they should get him at their price. Instead they’ve signed Mitchell Dodds, who is a journeyman who’ll be a bench player at best next season. Benji Marshall is past his best — I think he’s got something to offer, but he’s still past his best.
“I just don’t know where they are headed as a club in terms of recruitment. They’re losing Corey Parker, they’ve lost Jarrod Wallace. They need to be getting some genuine marquee players and they’re not getting them.”
