JOHNATHAN Thurston believes Kevin Walters would make the successful transition to Broncos coach if Wayne Bennett steps down at the end of 2019.

Thurston said he hoped his Cowboys would retain Paul Green, who is off contract and been courted by the Broncos for their coaching job, which might be available in 2020.

The Queensland halfback was one of Walters’s lieutenants in the team’s past two Origin series wins.

“Kevvie is a legend at the Broncos and if he gets that job at the Broncos they will be a formidable club with him at the helm,’’ Thurston said yesterday.

“He has been great taking over the Queensland role — he’s very passionate about that.

“Why wouldn’t they (the Broncos be keen to sign Green)? He is one of the best I’ve worked with. He has a great football brain and knows how to give a spray if needed or give a cuddle. He’s a great human and a great coach.

“Hopefully Greeny can sign on with the club for the next few years. He’s assembling his squad now. With the playing group and the structures in place I’m very excited about the year.’’

Thurston planned to top off his pre-season last night in the testimonial game for him and Cameron Smith, with a glimmering hope that he could have a similar farewell to the Cowboys that he managed for the Maroons last year.

“I’m not naive enough to think all dream come true but I will be putting my best foot forward so everyone in our team is playing to the best of their ability,’’ he said.

“But with the players we have and the leadership, anyone who gets out of line we are very quick to pull them in line.

“It’s one of the strongest squads in my time at the club.’’

Thurston said he would not chase a coach or assistant coach job especially early in his retirement, but may be tempted by consultancy work with young playmakers.

“Being injured last year gave me a real insight into coaching,’’ he said.

“I did a lot of work with the coaches and it gave me an appreciation of what the coaches put into it and I don’t think I have the mindset for it straight away.

“It might change in years to come. I could see myself doing some consultancy for it.

“This is my final year (as a player). I’m comfortable with that decision and I’m looking forward to the year ahead.’’
