Gold Coast Titans must chase Wayne Bennett if Broncos release the supercoach

SCOTT Sattler believes if Wayne Bennett comes on the open market the Gold Coast Titans must pull out all the stops in their pursuit of the supercoach.

GOLD Coast’s foundation football manager Scott Sattler has urged the Titans to poach Wayne Bennett, believing the super coach would bring premiership clout to the embattled club.

Bennett is unlikely to be at the Broncos in 2020 and could even be released by Brisbane sooner in a move that would see the most successful coach in NRL history land on the open market.

Bennett has been linked with a number of Sydney clubs, including Penrith and Parramatta, but insists he has had no formal offers.

Sattler, who helped build the Titans’ maiden roster in 2007, believes Bennett’s signing would be a public-relations coup for the Coast.

With Titans mentor Garth Brennan still contracted for next season, Sattler says Bennett could potentially operate as a director of football, but concedes the 68-year-old would have to be prepared to take a step back from coaching.

“There’s no doubt Wayne would bring massive profile to the Titans,” Sattler said.

“From a sponsorship point of view, it would be a coup because the perception is that Wayne breeds success and people want to be part of successful clubs.

“The only issue for me would be whether Wayne Bennett, as a potential coaching director, could work alongside a coach like Garth Brennan.

“Because Wayne still sees himself as a career coach, it may be hard for him to let go of the reins and allow someone younger to call the shots with the team.

“But if Wayne went to the Titans, it would give the club some pulling power.”

Titans co-owner Darryl Kelly is happy with Brennan’s performance and says it’s crucial any decisions do not destabilise the club.

“We have a tight budget so there would have to be positive outcomes both in a coaching sense and a monetary sense (by signing Bennett),” Kelly said.

“We’ve got a harmonious club at the moment and I wouldn’t bring in anyone who upsets that harmony.

“We would need everyone on board thinking it’s a good idea.”
