Five things we learned from Broncos trial match with Souths Logan

Brisbane have unearthed another halfback sensation, have the best young forwards in the NRL — and they have a Payne Haas. Here’s what else we learned from the preseason clash.

• Broncos rain Payne on Souths Logan

1. The Broncos have unearthed another halfback sensation in Tom Dearden. Still only 17, Dearden toyed with the bigger and older Souths Logan side, scoring two solo tries in the first 31 minutes. Fellow playmaker Corey Paix also impressed, ensuring Kodi Nikorima cannot be complacent.

2. Get ready NRL rivals — Payne Haas is ready to rumble this season. The 120kg monster tormented the hapless Magpies, consistently smashing through the advantage line with his mobility and bulk. It is scary to think Haas is still only 19.

3. Brisbane have the best young forwards in the NRL. Aside from Haas, Tevita Pangai Jnr and David Fifita, the Broncos handed more senior debuts to Tom Flegler and Pat Carrigan. The duo handled the Souths Logan forwards with ease.

4. Outside back Herbie Farnworth is an exciting prospect. The 19-year-old Englishman played for Norths Devils last season and showed some blistering pace against the Magpies. He looks NRL quality.

5. The Broncos have a handy deputy for Andrew McCullough in Jake Turpin. The former Storm hooker skippered the Baby Broncos and was clever around the rucks, scoring a solo try in the eighth minute. He then set-up a second half try with a bust in midfield.
