JORDAN Kahu is set for a showdown with Maroons star Dane Gagai as the Broncos admitted their defence needed to lift if Brisbane is to play finals football.

Kahu is on track to earn a recall for Thursday night’s crucial clash against South Sydney at Suncorp Stadium after being axed for last week’s derby loss to North Queensland.

Kahu spent a week on the sidelines following a poor performance against Canterbury, paving the way for Gehamat Shibasaki to make his NRL debut at left centre.

However the Kiwi Test international could be recalled for the Rabbitohs game in a bid to shutdown star South Sydney centre Gagai.

“Jordie has got a lot of experience,” Broncos forward Alex Glenn said.

“When we come into tough games and situations, experience is always going to help.

“Getting Jordie back is going to be a big bonus for us. He is going to come in with some confidence from (Monday’s) session.

SPEED UP: Bennett’s time could be over

BANNED: Broncos players can’t speak on Bennett

“Me, Milly (Anthony Milford) and Oatesy (Corey Oates) love having him out there with us (on the left side). He brings a lot of aggression and always puts his body on the line.

“That’s what we need.”

The eighth-placed Broncos are in danger of missing the play-offs with a tough run of games against the Rabbitohs (second), Roosters (first) and Sea Eagles (12th) to come.

Brisbane has blown two golden opportunities to lockup a finals berth with losses to Canterbury (14th) and North Queensland (last) in the past fortnight.

The Broncos have conceded 70 points across their past two losses and Glenn said their defence needed to improve.

“There has been areas of our game where it’s come down to the wire and we haven’t competed as hard as we should,” he said.

“It’s a discipline thing. It’s a mental thing. We recapped that and everyone is on the same page.

“To win games it comes down to defence and our defence has let us down the last couple of weeks. That’s something that’s going to be our main focus.

“We’re not worried about our attack because we can score points. It’s our defence that has been letting us down.

“Our mentality going into this game is our defence.”
