WELCOME to the NRL Payne Haas, outstanding Oates and Bird’s confidence takes another hit - five things we learned from Brisbane’s win over South Sydney.

1) PAYNE Haas, welcome to the NRL. The exciting young forward delivered on all the expectations that have been placed upon him in an impressive 20 minute stint last night.

He ran for 86m, made 13 tackles and showed he has no fear in an outstanding debut.

With Brisbane dealing with a number of injuries, he should have secured himself a first grade spot for the next few weeks at least.

2) THE Broncos will be sweating on the fitness of star forward Josh McGuire after he suffered an ankle injury in last night’s victory.

With Matt Gillett (neck) and Andrew McCullough (elbow) already on the sideline - and Matt Lodge failing to return in the second half with a rib injury - Brisbane will be hoping McGuire’s problem is a minor one.

He was already the first-choice replacement for McCullough and any absence would leave coach Wayne Bennett with few options.

3) COREY Oates must be pushing for an Origin recall for Queensland. The towering winger was outstanding against the Rabbitohs and a constant threat.

He scored a game-changing try midway through the second half, set up Darius Boyd for another four-pointer, ran for 213m and made six tackle busts.

Apart from a few errors, he certainly made an impressive statement.

4) JACK Bird spoke this week of his concerns over his confidence and it was clear in the opening half that he is struggling.

Bird made two crucial errors, with a fumbled kick in the in-goal leading to South Sydney’s first try.

He had an improved second half, but he must overcome these issues to prove his worth at the Broncos.

5) GREG Inglis celebrated his 250th NRL match and did so in style.

While South Sydney couldn’t get the win, Inglis was solid in his continued comeback.

He ran for 98m and tried hard for his side. He will be a certainty for Origin.
