As the Brisbane Broncos celebrated the 30th anniversary of their first premiership, a poignant question hung in the air ... is another one brewing?
Beneath the gaze of the 1992 premiership team, who were celebrating their reunion, a patched-up Broncos team displayed the sort of spirit to win titles by thumping the Dragons 32-18.
Premiership heroes such as Kerrod Walters, Glenn Lazarus, Chris Johns, Willie Carne, Andrew Gee and Trevor Gillmeister admired the relentless energy and high spirit of the current side as they watched from the Suncorp Stadium grandstand, meeting earlier for a quiet beer at the Paddo Tavern.
Current Broncos head coach Kevin Walters and his assistant Terry Matterson were also part of the triumphant ‘92 team, which also beat the Dragons.
Kevin’s twin brother Kerrod gave the current squad something to strive for when he said the bonds within premiership sides remain eternal.
“After 30 years, we are still good mates and enjoy each other’s company,’’ Kerrod said. “We will talk about Steve Renouf’s (length of the field) try and if you made a mistake you hear about it many times throughout the day. Normally Alf (Allan Langer) is the one dishing it out, but he is away in Origin camp, so we are not copping as much.
“The memories of parts of it – particularly the celebrations – are so clear. I remember getting back from Sydney to the Brisbane airport where there were thousands of people there. Then we went to King George Square where there were thousands more people and back to the Broncos Leagues Club. It was overwhelming to be honest. It really hit home to us that we had achieved something quite special.’’
