Broncos launch black jersey to raise mental health awareness across sports

The Brisbane Broncos are using a striking black jersey to publicly confront a crisis affecting one in three athletes, in a cross-code call to action.

In a powerful moment for Australian sport, the Brisbane Broncos have unveiled a striking all-black jersey designed to raise awareness about mental health – the nation’s first-ever jersey solely dedicated to the cause.

Star players Corey Jensen, Kotoni Staggs and Jesse Arthars fronted the launch on Tuesday, modelling the minimalist kit which was created in partnership with the Black Dog Institute and apparel sponsor ASICS.

The jersey, to be worn during the Broncos’ Round 14 home clash against the Titans on June 7, marks the centrepiece of a new Mental Health Round the club has initiated.

The bold all-black design strips back branding in favour of a unified statement.

Major sponsors have also removed their logos entirely, with only a subtle gel application making them visible under lights, a symbolic gesture reflecting the often-hidden nature of mental health struggles.

The initiative comes during a period of mourning in the sporting world, following the recent deaths of former AFL players Adam Selwood in May and his twin brother, Troy, in February.

The Broncos’ mental health jersey is a cross-code call to action, with the Broncos hoping to unite Australian sport behind the cause.

Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy said the AFL tragedy had further sharpened his club’s focus.

“No matter the code, or colour of your kit, I can’t imagine anyone in the sporting world not being shaken by the Selwood family’s painful loss this week,” Mr Donaghy said.

“While not by design, that’s exactly why we’ve been working for 12 months to make this round happen.”

Each jersey will feature a QR code linking to a new Broncos Wellness Hub, developed with the Black Dog Institute.

Jerseys worn during the game will be auctioned, with a significant portion of proceeds donated to the Black Dog Institute to support mental health research and treatment.

Fans can also purchase replica jerseys, helping drive support off the field.

Research cited by the club shows one in three elite athletes experience symptoms of anxiety or depression, with 75 per cent of mental health issues emerging before age 25.

The Mental Health Round game at Suncorp Stadium promises to be a sombre, yet hopeful occasion, where the darkest jersey in Broncos history aims to shine the brightest light.
