The Broncos surrendered an 18-nil lead to lose 20-18 to Manly on Thursday night.

It was a vastly improved performance by Brisbane following last week’s record 59-0 loss to the Roosters.

Payne Haas was at this usual best for the Broncos and a rookie winger exploded with a series of stunning aerial leaps.

Here is how the Broncos rated:

1 Jamayne Isaako – 6

Was safe at the back and busy with 14 runs for 122m but hasn’t had the spark he did in the opening two rounds of the season.

2 Xavier Coates – 8

Terrorised Manly’s left side with his soaring leaps all night and scored a sensational try. A real weapon out wide for the Broncos and should be persisted with despite giving away a crucial penalty.

Xavier Coates scored a stunning try and was a constant threat on the night.

3 Kotoni Staggs – 7

Freakish player scored a try out of nothing and should have got more involved when the game was on the line.

4 Darius Boyd – 6

Showed confidence to go himself and score his first try of the season and was denied another by The Bunker. Did a good job on Moses Suli but his defensive choices are still suspect.

5 Herbie Farnworth – 7

Safe on the wing with sharp feet and racked up 16 runs for 138m. A really handy player without being spectacular.

6 Anthony Milford – 5

Did some great things and some not-so-great things. Finished with two try-assists but his five runs weren’t enough and didn’t take control with the game on the line.

Anthony Milford failed to take control of the game as the Broncos need him to.

7 Brodie Croft – 5

His first kick of the game sailed out on the full and while he tried hard all night there is a real chance he could make way for young gun Tom Dearden.

8 Matt Lodge – 7

Had a big opening half in his first starting appearance of the season and tried to lead the Broncos in the middle. Finished with 18 carries for 139m and 24 tackles but gave away three penalties.

9 Cory Paix – 6

Has been thrown in the deep end and is treading water in a tough position. Racked up 36 tackles without missing one and has done his best in tough circumstances.

Payne Haas put in a typically tireless effort for the Broncos and didn’t deserve to lose.

10 Payne Haas – 8

Another monumental effort form the Energiser bunny in the middle who just doesn’t stop. His effort cannot be questioned and managed 18 runs for 163m and 35 tackles.

11 Corey Oates – 5

Started in the back row for the first time since 2014. Tried hard but he is a work in progress in a demanding position and 22 tackles would have been a rude shock for the winger.

12 Joe Ofahengaue – 5

Promoted to the starting side for the first time this year. Made 30 tackles in a solid defensive performance but didn’t provide any attacking threat.

13 Pat Carrigan – 7

Topped Brisbane’s tackle count with 42 and made 115m in a whole-hearted performance without any highlights.

14 Tesi Niu – 4

Made a couple of encouraging runs late in the game but hasn’t had any real opportunity to showcase his spark.

15 Ben Te’o – No rating

Made one run and five tackles in his first NRL game in six years. In the team to bring experience rather than performance.

16 Rhys Kennedy – 4

Couple of runs and 13 tackles from a short hit-out.

17 Tom Flegler – 5

Solid contribution from the bench with 12 runs for 85m and 14 tackles.
