WITH scores tied at nil-all at the sixth minute mark, the Broncos looked flat in their home game against the West Tigers.

After spending the previous three tackles of the set stuck deep in their own half, the Broncos had nothing happening in attack. Their line was flat and the Tigers’ defence seemed too strong.

However one individual act of brilliance turned the tides for the Brisbane side.

Taking the ball on his own 20 metre line, nobody expected Ben Hunt to bust through the first two defensive efforts, let alone to continue up the field after he was brought down but not held by a third defender.

Hunt cut halfway across the field, evading two poor tackle attempts from a scrambling Wests defensive outfit, only to be brought down and not held for a second time.

The number seven then managed to get an offload out to teammate Jack Reed, as the Broncos continued to shift the ball, executing a simple draw and pass to put Lachlan Maranta in the corner for Brisbane’s first try.

Hunt’s lead from the start of the match built momentum for the Broncos to come away with a 42-16 victory in front of 37,620 fans at Suncorp, keeping them firmly placed at the top of the NRL ladder.

The win was set up by a dominant first half in which the Broncos ran in five unanswered tries, including two to backrower Alex Glenn, to take a 26-0 lead into the sheds.

Brisbane five-eighth Anthony Milford’s moment of magic sealed the home team’s first half dominance.

Milford’s no-look inside pass released Darius Boyd, who then found Jack Reed and the Brisbane centre outsprinted Kevin Naiqama to score right on the siren.

That scoreline may have lulled Brisbane into a false sense of security as the Tigers ran in three tries inside the opening 15 minutes of the second half.

Alex Glenn scored a double against the Wests Tigers in Brisbane’s round 19 victory.

Hard-running Ava Seumanafagai sparked the revival when he crashed over after a pass by Luke Brooks which looked suspiciously forward.

Just four minutes later Manaia Cherrington snuck in from dummy-half and then James Tedesco’s flick pass released Naiqama, who sprinted down the touchline before finding Mitchell Moses to reduce the deficit to just 10.

An accidental elbow to the head of Tim Simona left the Tigers centre dazed and halted the visitor’s momentum.

After Simona was taken from the field for a concussion test, Broncos winger Lachlan Maranta crossed twice to complete a hat-trick and secure the points for Brisbane.

The defeat is the Tigers’ fourth in a row and leaves them rooted to the bottom of the competition ladder ahead of Friday’s clash with the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium.
