NRL teams round 2: SuperCoach analysis, don’t make these common mistakes

It’s easy to say but hard to do. NRL SuperCoaches are making a host of simple errors in round 2 and it’s time to nip it in the bud.

SuperCoach NRL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 2

Hello and welcome to Team List Tuesday for Round 2.

Here is how every team will line up this week, with the Melbourne Storm on bye.

Full analysis below, PLUS, relive our live Q&A with Rob Sutherland below.

DON’T MAKE THESE COMMON MISTAKES

* Don’t rage. It’s easy to say but hard to do. Like many I had Luke Metcalf in my scoring 17 and was deeply disappointed by his score. But the Warriors never fired a shot in Vegas. The forwards toiled but the entire backline (almost entire, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck toiled manfully) looked inept. The team is better than that and Metcalf is too. Hold firm and give him at least one more week. Manly are no pushovers but I’m confident Metcalf and the Warriors will be much improved on home turf.

The same goes for a number of other tops sells. Jaxon Purdue (28) and Tom Duffy (27) actually did OK when you consider the flow of the game for a well-beaten Cowboys. Anyone considering rage trading these two should watch highlights from the Cowboys’ final trial - you will change your mind instantly.

* Don’t overreact to injuries: Young gun Casey McLean is the third most sold player this week and that just doesn’t make sense. Knocked out just three minutes into the first round, McLean is nonetheless named this week thanks to the extended lay-off provided to Las Vegas teams. A superstar in the making at a team which scores points for fun (note that the guy who took McLean’s wing scored two tries against the Sharks). Hold.

* Don’t get on a player too early: Yes, a number of players played out of their skin in round one but can it continue? A classic example is Jack Gosiewski. Plenty will go there after a star showing. But realistically the Broncos played a very depleted side and he only scored 39 in 80 minutes if you take away the try and linebreak. He’s never had a good work rate (career PPM of 0.65) so let’s see if he can produce again this week.

Likewise, Jesse Arthars (94) is the third most popular buy this week after a big game against the Roosters. Yes, the Broncos look a different team this year, but he’s never averaged over 38 in a season despite playing 81 NRL games. Another example is Sitili Tupouniua, who had a blinder against the Dragons with 103 points. Can he produce that again? Put it this way, he won’t score two tries every week.

WAIT

* Savelio Tamale - Looms as one of the top cheapies of the year after scoring 73 in round one with 11 tackle busts. His main competition for a spot, Albert Hopoate, is back from paternity leave this week. But Tamale retains a spot with Xavier Savage suspended. The big question is whether Tamale retains a spot when both Hoppa and Savage are in the side. We won’t know until next week so keep your powder dry.

MUST-HAVES

If you don’t own these guys, just do it: Gehamat Shibasaki, Corey Horsburgh, Isaiah Iongi, Sandon Smith and Robert Toia. No explanation required. But if you need one, check here.

LOOMING SELLS

* Peter Mamouzelous - The 72 minutes and 36 tackles are no doubt encouraging. But only three runs is not. Still, he’s worth another crack especially with Harry Grant on the bye this week. However, Grant, Max Plath and Phoenix Crossland are serious options in the position, so start planning ahead.

* Nicho Hynes - He notched a respectable score, including the opening try assist. But he didn’t kick goals for the Sharks with Braydon Trindall preferred. This looms as a huge issue going forward but is a hold for now unless you can go to Nathan Cleary straight up. Other options at halfback need further inspection this week – no-one is jumping out.

WINNERS FROM TEAMS

* Jamie Humphreys - Named to start at halfback for the Rabbitohs with Lewis Dodd on the bench. Could be a genuine cheapie option but take another look this week.

* Tino Fa’asuamaleaui - The Titans are back from the bye and Tino is set for decent minutes after being named at lock. Jayden Campbell and AJ Brimson are other tempting PODs at the Titans.

* Brian To’o - Back from a hamstring injury for the Panthers after missing round one. Could be an option in a few weeks.

* Billy Smith - Named on the extended bench as he aims to return from a hip injury. Our cheapie Robert Toia appears safe, but we hear Dominic Young or Mark Nawaqanitawase could be in the firing line. And of course, Smith may emerge as a cheapie option himself - he was in the top 10 most popular players at stages during the pre-season.

LOSERS FROM TEAMS

* David Fifita - Named on the bench for the Titans in a significant blow for POD hunters. Equally though, he does have a very good record off the bench.

* Tyrone Munro - The South Sydney excitement machine is out for six weeks with a third collarbone injury.

* Kulikefu Finefeuiaki - The popular cheapie/mid is out this week through concussion. Scored 48 in 54 minutes with seven tackles busts in round one.
