Souths awarded controversial penalty try

It was a high-octane night at Kayo Stadium with both sides putting plenty of points on the board and a number of SuperCoach stars stood tall.

See the full analysis of winners and losers from Thursday's game.

WINNERS

Dolphins star Jack Bostock (108 points) topped the SuperCoach scoring thanks to his try and 271 run metres.

Alex Johnston (103) accumulated points late thanks to his two tries while teammate Jacob Gagai (98) wasn’t far off thanks after crossing three times.

Dolphin Herbie Farnworth (90) was solid with a try and 167m along with Souths five-eighth Jack Wighton (85) who was solid.

LOSERS

Kodi Nikorima (36) picked up a try but came off in the second half after aggravating an existing sternum injury.

Souths centre Richard Kennar (27) did little to impact the game for coaches despite playing 80 minutes and teammate Michael Chee Kam (39) didn’t fare much better.

Coaches will be second guessing the inclusion of Dolphin Kenny Bromwich (34) while Ray Stone (28) failed to produce off the bench.

FULLTIME - Dolphins 36-28

Two tries in a matter of minutes has scuppered Souths hopes of a comeback.

Sean O’Sullivan’s first try of the season was backed up by a Trai Fuller special that capped off a run of play down nearly the entire length of the field by the Dolphins.

Is Fuller the best 27-year-old rookie the NRL has ever seen?

Seconds after being forced over the touch line Alex Johnston responded by scoring down the left side before Jacob Gagai crossed for this third of the night. But it was all too little too late.

65th minute - Dolphins 24-18

Souths on the cusp of steamrolling the Dolphins.

A try from Alex Johnston down the left edge after barrelling over multiple defenders has reduced the deficit to just six points.

The Dolphins could be made to pay for failing to convert their chances late in the first half.

Meanwhile, Sean Keppie has gone off for a HIA assessment.

59th minute - Dolphins 24-14

Just as the game looked to be slipping away from Souths the Rabbitohs have hit back through Jacob Gagai.

Jye Gray’s speed to get to the outside of his direct opponent gave Gagai space on the right win and now only 10 points separates the sides.

56th minute - Dolphins 24-10

It’s been a grind for both sides and Souths just can’t seem to find a way to build any type of momentum against the Dolphins.

Taane Milne crossed but was penalised for a double movement. It sums up the night for the Rabbitohs who have been their worst enemy in Queensland.

49th minute - Dolphins 24-10

The Dolphins halves have combined to send Kodi Nikorima over as the home side heaps more pressure on Souths.

The Rabbitohs have conceded more tries to kicks than any other club this season, with rivals scoring 27 times with the tactic in 2024.

HALFTIME - Dolphins 18-10

The Dolphins will take an eight-point lead into the break but the margin could have been even bigger had they made the most of multiple chances late in the half.

Jack Bostock (74 points) leads the SuperCoach ratings so far while Tevita Pangai Junior (57) is showing exactly why Wayne Bennett gave him an NRL lifeline.

Pangai Junior has run a team high 97m from 10 runs and made three tackle breaks.

27th - Dolphins 18-10

Herbie Farnworth has stormed through two defenders to cross and put the Dolphins eight points ahead again.

Souths attempted a short restart but it backfired when Farnworth came searching for the line down the left edge.

23rd minute - 12-10

Tevita Pangai Junior has responded to the lifeline Wayne Bennett provided by scoring in an energetic opening half from the boxer.

It came straight after Euan Aitken left the field with what looked like a pectoral or shoulder injury.

But the lead vanished in an instant again with Cody Walker setting up Jacob Gagai who has just returned to the field after being cleared of HIA.

11th minute - 6-6

It seems we are in for a strange old night at Kayo Stadium.

Souths fullback Jye Gray has been awarded a penalty try after being impeded by Trai Fuller while chasing a grubber.

Gray had no defenders in sight when he dropped the ball in his try attempt but Fuller’s contact was enough for Souths to be given the four points.

Meanwhile, Souths player Jacob Gagai has gone off with a category two HIA and has 15 minutes to return to the field. He was also getting a cut stitched up.

Peter Mamouzelos has moved to hooker, Damien Cook to centre and Richard Kennar to the wing.

6th minute - Dolphins 6-0

Jack Bostock has scored on the left edge for the Dolphins following a bizarre penalty given to Tevita Pangai Junior.

Junior took t the air like a light fullback in goal before steaming to his own 20m line to take a quick tap.

Cody Walker brushed the big man who dropped the ball and the Rabbitohs playmaker was deemed to be offside.

The resulting set of six led to Bostock ensuring South Sydney score first for the eighth NRL game in a row.

PREVIEW

The Dolphins and Rabbitohs kick off NRL round 19 with Phins given a rare chance to play in front of their heartland supporters at Redcliffe’s Kayo Stadium.

Wayne Bennett’s men are only scheduled to play three games there in 2024, so they will no doubt be fired up.

Bennett also comes up against the club he will coach next season, which could make for some awkward moments.

SuperCoach players to watch include:

* Clearly SuperCoaches are backing some attacking stats from the Dolphins at home with Jamayne Isaako the second most popular vice-captain of the week.

* Likewise, plenty of SuperCoaches have entrusted South Sydney’s Cody Walker with the VC, but how will he go without fellow attacking ace Latrell Mitchell (foot)?

* Damien Cook has shot to almost 20 per cent ownership following confirmation Harry Grant is carrying a sternum injury.
