KFC NRL SuperCoach 2022 Round 9 wrap: Highs, lows and trade targets

The KFC SuperCoach Mastermind crunches the stats to help you answer the biggest trade issues of the round. ANALYSIS FOR EVERY GAME

Nicho Hynes launched into NRL SuperCoach stardom almost a year ago with the Storm when he scored 182 against the a 12-man Dragons who had Tyrell Fuimaano sent off for a high shot on Ryan Papenhuyzen at Magic Round.

He stepped up on that day and did it again on Sunday against the Warriors, smashing his previous best score with 185 for the Sharks, only this time, he was on the 12-man team with Will Kennedy sent off in the first half.

Hynes filled Kennedy’s shoes picking up some fullback duties and played his own halves role perfectly, notching SuperCoach points with ease across so many categories including a try, three try assists, five offloads and four forced dropouts.

Just 8% of SuperCoaches captained Hynes for his personal best, 37% backed Papenhuyzen who looked set for a massive score of his own before injuring a hamstring on his way to scoring his second try of the day and finishing on 76. Nathan Cleary was backed by 11.5% but could only muster 40 points against the Eels.

Those who took a risk on the captaincy should be rewarded with a rank boost this week with Harry Grant, Cameron Munster and James Tedesco all delivering centuries.

Papenhuyzen is the SuperCoach top scorer so naturally his injury will dominate trade discussions this week. I’d be selling with options like Hynes, Tedesco returning to form with a hat-trick, and Tom Trbojevic back from injury all better than leaving $900k on the bench for a couple weeks.

Of course you could also put that Papenhuyzen money in another position and leave it invested with Storm guns Grant and Munster seeing how they took charge and poured on the points with Papenhuyzen off the field.

Time to salute this week’s players who hit triple figures. Hope you had a swag of these players in your team this week and the captaincy armband on one of them.

Nicho Hynes, 185, Harry Grant, 138, Cameron Munster, 130, James Tedesco, 126, Reuben Garrick, 113, Daly Cherry-Evans, 105, Luke Keary, 105, Teig Wilton, 102, and Adam Reynolds, 100.

Rabbitohs 12-32 Broncos

Highs: Adam Reynolds, 100, masterminded the victory over his former team with a try, two try assists, a try contribution, 6/6 goals, three tackle busts, a linebreak and linebreak assist. He’s scored 50+ in every game since Round 3, with this his second century of the season and is averaging almost 10 points better than any of his years at the Rabbitohs. Taane Milne, 93, had two tries, two linebreaks and four tackle busts playing in the Rabbitohs right wing. Patrick Carrigan, 92, shouldered the load with Payne Haas taking a week off. Carrigan played 64 minutes in the middle and had 62 in base stats, two offloads, a try assist and linebreak assist. Selwyn Cobbo, 85, had two tries, a linebreak and nine tackle busts. The teenager has four tries in his past three games after missing out in the first six rounds and is rewarding patient owners.

Lows: Two of the biggest attacking weapons on the field didn’t have an impact with Kotoni Staggs, 14, having just five hit-ups and Alex Johnston, 14, having eight hit-ups. Te Maire Martin, 16, made three errors and missed out on the attacking stats. He was a popular trade in last week but this score will hurt his cash generation. Tyson Gamble, 13, had just one run for the game. Isaiah Tass, 24, was the most popular trade in last week but missed out on attacking stats. Jai Arrow, 28, started the season well enough averaging close to 60PPG in the first five rounds but his scoring has slumped below 50PPG in the past four rounds. On the chopping block this week.

Watchlist: Trent Peoples, 68, had 42 in base stats, a linebreak, a few offloads and tackle busts playing on the left backrow for the Rabbitohs. An impressive debut and as cheap as they come. Blake Taaffe, 51, had a try assist, linebreak and a couple goals as he scored well enough to keep the price rises coming. Cody Walker, 47, had a try assist and two linebreak assists but also had three errors and gave away two penalties for -10 points. Lachlan Ilias, 52, posted his second score over 50 for the season to lock in a few more price rises. Rabbitohs bench player Siliva Havili, 54, followed up from 56 the week before. He’s dual hooker and second row and cheap.

Raiders 14-4 Bulldogs

Highs: Matt Burton, 71, scored his first try of the season and had nine tackle busts. At his most dangerous when he’s running the ball and could be worth a punt at 5/8 with easier fixtures running into bye coverage. Tevita Pangai, 67, had 59 in base stats, three tackle busts and surprisingly just one offload. Another one to consider for bye coverage with his dual 2RF/FRF status useful.

Lows: Brad Schneider, 26, made $200k but those hoping to hold him through to the first bye round should be worried by his scoring dropping off.

Watchlist: Adam Elliott, 57, repeated his role from the week before playing the opening stages at hooker before moving into the middle. Didn’t find the attacking points of the 100 from last week but still impressive numbers with 53 in base stats.

Panthers 20-22 Eels

Highs: Taylan May, 96, was sold by 8000 SuperCoaches and punished them with two tries a linebreak and 44 in base stats. He held his place on the left wing, where he’s scored 10 tries in seven games this season to sit clear as the top averaging CTW. Clint Gutherson, 96, bounced back after two lean rounds with a try, linebreak, try assist, linebreak assist and five tackle busts. Isaiah Papali’i, 93, pumped out 75 in base stats, nine tackle busts and an offload. He’s a dual 2RF/FRF and top scorer in both positions. You really need him sooner rather than later. Apisai Koroisau, 92, played the full 80 minutes after sharing minutes the previous two weeks. He made 53 tackles and had two try and linebreak assists. Ryan Matterson, 91, scored a try, had a few tackle busts and offloads and 50 base stats in 50 minutes. He’s averaged 64PPG but is in just 1% of teams, most scared off by his bench role but it doesn’t seem to be impacting his scoring.

Lows: Nathan Cleary, 40, missed five tackles and two goals. Liam Martin, 30, had just five runs for the game. Mitchell Moses, 34, was sold by 6000 coaches last week after his 8 against the Cowboys. Anybody else still holding probably sees him return close to his starting price in the coming weeks with those scores rolling in his average.

Watchlist: Brian To’o, 81, made an impressive return from injury with 52 in base stats, two linebreaks and six tackle busts. His injury affected Round 2 score should bring his price down to about $650k in the coming weeks. Make a plan to get him either asap and beat the rush or wait until after the first bye round given he’s a lock for Origin. Izack Tago, 34, put up his second score in the 30s in the past three weeks which is bound to make some owners nervous. Just hold him for the bye round and reevaluate.

Sea Eagles 36-22 Tigers

Highs: Reuben Garrick, 113, scored two tries, had 10 tacklebusts, three linebreaks, kicked 4/7 goals and could have scored even higher but for three errors one with the line wide open. If you can’t afford Tom Trbojevic, Garrick is the best Turbo insurance you can get and he’ll cover you for the bye round. One to consider strongly this week before the price creeps out of reach. Daly Cherry Evans, 105, was at his busy best with his top score of the season including a try, two try assists, six tackle busts, a linebreak and two linebreak assists. He’s been incredibly consistent scoring no lower than 60. Ben Trbojevic, 96, was named in the centres at the start of the week but ended up in the right backrow position with Haumole Olaka’uatu ruled out. He was in the thick of the points there with two tries and linebreaks on top of 34 in base stats. Hopefully he could hold on to a position and makes some money and cover the bye. Joe Ofahengaue, 94, scored his first try of the season and had 51 in base stats, five tackle busts and a few offloads. He’s quietly crunched out a five-round average of 65PPG and added $100k to his value.

Lows: Ken Maumalo, 1, failed a HIA early on. Stefano Utoikamanu, 6, was sin binned and played just 22 minutes on return from injury. His price will drop in the weeks ahead and you could easily downgrade Max King to him after the bye round. Kelma Tuilagi, 31, played the full game for just the second time this season but had seven missed tackles hurting his score.

Watchlist: Christian Tuipulotu, 70, scored his third try in three weeks to double his value. There could be more money to be made here and valuable bye coverage too if you’re late to the party. Plenty of others are. Oliver Gildart, 85, scored his first try of the season, had three linebreaks and seven tackle busts. The Englishman is still cheap after a slow start in the NRL. Asu Kepaoa, 42, had a try assist in his second game of the season and is set for a price rise after his next outing.

Roosters 44-16 Titans

Highs: James Tedesco, 126, had three tries, three linebreaks and nine tackle busts. This week it was more about the quality of the runs rather than the number of them with 14 hit-ups compared to 22 and 23 the previous games. Luke Keary, 105, had four try assists and four linebreak assists and is starting to find his groove again after two try assists the week before. The Roosters wingers both bagged doubles and big scores with Joseph Suaalii, 86, topping Daniel Tupou, 83.

Lows: Lindsay Collins, 27, was sin binned. Sam Verrills, 14, went off injured after 20 minutes. Sitili Tupouniua, 14, played just 18 minutes off the bench. Kevin Proctor, 22, had three runs in 60 minutes replacing the injured David Fifita. The Titans outside backs struggled to make an impact with Greg Marzhew, 22, Brian Kelly, 22, Alexander Brimson, 19, and Corey Thompson, 12, all disappointing.

Watchlist: Angus Crichton, 64, played 80 minutes for the fourth week in a row and had 50 in base stats, two offloads and four tackle busts. He’s still priced in the low $500k range a great discount for a player with his record. Sam Walker, 66, had a try assists, kicked 5/6 goals and had two linebreak assists as he bounced back from a shocking 9 points against the Bulldogs. His price should continue to head south for a couple weeks.

Cowboys 36-16 Knights

Highs: Chad Townsend, 90, had four try assists and three linebreak assists in only his second score above 40 for the season despite the Cowboys strong form. Kyle Feldt, 82, had two tries and two linebreaks over the opening seven rounds. After scoring a hat-trick in the Darwin demolition of the Eels last week he added another try and three linebreaks against the Knights. Chris Randall, 78, scored his first try of the season to lock in further price rises for patient owners. You can just about hold him close to the bye round now and make the most of his $200k price rise.

Lows: Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, 6, had just 18 minutes off the bench. In that time last week he scored 64 points against the Eels. If the Cowboys continue to use him like that expect some big price drops. Edrick Lee, 12, failed a HIA.

Watchlist: Valentine Holmes, 74, is kicking goals and scoring tries in a top 4 team. He should probably be on your radar. Scott Drinkwater, 74, was replaced by Tabui-Fidow for the closing stages a worry for those who traded him in last week. Having Tabui-Fidow on the bench does however help the prospects of Reece Robson, 67, and Reuben Cotter, 68 who have played the full 80 minutes in the past two games.

Storm 42-6 Dragons

Highs: Harry Grant, 138, is tearing away from his rivals in the position. Scoring more points than Damien Cook despite playing two fewer games. Grant’s worst game this season is a 79 and he’s picked up attacking points every game. This week he had two try assists, four linebreak assists, four tackle busts, 16 points from offloads, a linebreak and 57 in base stats. Cameron Munster, 130, like Grant is topping his position despite playing fewer games. His third century of the season included a try, try assist, three try contributions, 10 tackle busts, an offload, three linebreaks, a linebreak assist and 32 in base stats. Nick Meaney, 77, would be worth a trade on form alone running on the left wing outside Munster, but the injury to Ryan Papenhuyzen gives him the goalkicking duties at the least. Meaney kicked 5/6 goals in the second half to top up his score.

Lows: Remis Smith, 7, went off injured after 11 minutes. Jack Bird, 26, missed 11 tackles.Ben Hunt, 4, missed eight tackles. Moses Mbye, 5, missed five tackles and made three errors.

Watchlist: Ryan Papenhuyzen, 76, scored two tries in 50 minutes before picking up a hamstring injury. A tough call awaits owners of the top pointscoring player. Tyran Wishart, 61, replaced Smith and was impressive showing his utility value switching to fullback in the second half. If he lands a starting spot he could be worth a buy.

Sharks 29-10 Warriors

Highs: Nicho Hynes, 185, produced a personal best tally topping his 182 from Magic Round last year. scored a try, had three try assists, kicked 4/5 goals, slotted a field goal, had four tackle busts, four forced dropouts, five offloads, three linebreak assists and 40 in base stats. Teig Wilton, 102, scored a try, had six tackle busts and 58 in base stats. Connor Tracey, 80, scored two tries on his return from injury and if you want a piece of the Sharks backs he’s the cheapest option available.

Lows: William Kennedy, -10, was sent off for a high tackle on Reece Walsh. His price can only go south with that score sitting in his average and he might be a tempting option for some when he bottoms out after whatever suspension he’s served.

Watchlist: Daejarn Asi, 35, had a try assist and is set for a price rise after his next game. Villiami Vailea, 32, scored a try for the second week in a row but his numbers are hardly impressive. Siosifa Talakai, 50, has hit his peak for now so decide if you view him as a keeper or want to cash him out. The Sharks still have a nice draw so I’d be inclined to hold. Cameron McInnes, 63, played 64 minutes and did similar last week but don’t expect explosive scores from him you can probably grab after the bye if you’re after a reliable 60PPG option.
