MAROONS flyer Dane Gagai has become the first winger to win the Wally Lewis Medal for State of Origin player of the series.

Gagai defied the struggles he’s had at Newcastle to emerge as something of an Origin specialist - even in Queensland’s Game I defeat he was excellent with the way he carried the ball out of his own end.

This continued in Queensland’s two victories in Game II and III, and his crucial double in Sydney helped keep the Maroons series hopes alive.

It may seem unusual for a winger to earn such an honour, but Gagai was a richly deserving winner.

He made a staggering 561 running metres across the three games.
