Sam Thaiday might have told a bad joke, but the NSW Origin team are one

RECKON Sam Thaiday’s post-match quip was bad? Did it offend you? If so, don’t click here because we’ve got one that is a lot worse.

WHAT an appalling joke.

That’s not Sam Thaiday’s post-Origin virginity quip I’m referring to here. It’s the way the morality police in NSW have reacted to it.

Not that the morality police are really the ones pulling the strings behind the “Sam Vileday” outrage.

Those making the most noise are Blues supporters determined to deflect attention away from the pathetic performance of their team in Game 1.

Even Phil Gould, a man who if he’d been with Custer at the Little Big Horn would have said, “we’re not losing” as the men in blue dropped around him, described NSW as “playing like a club team”.

Not any club team in Queensland, Gus.

Having had enough ball, enough opportunity and but not nearly enough ability to win on Wednesday night, the Blues’ coach Laurie Daly pulled the old “sack the refs” card.

Given that the refs made at least as many errors that disadvantaged Queensland as NSW on the night, that probably wasn’t going to have much of a shelf life, which is where Sam came into the picture.

OK, so it wasn’t that good a joke, but have you ever listened to Sam on the Nova breakfast show? He’s not that funny.

Seriously, on a scale of one to 10, one being “why did the chicken cross the road?” and 10 being “how do Indians get their names?” I’d rate it a six, maybe even a seven, which for Sam is about as good as it gets.

The problem is, he’s been fooled into thinking that he’s Jack Benny (or for younger readers, Chris Rock). Every time he so much as opens his mouth on Nova his co-hosts fall off their chairs in spasms of hysterical laughter.

So if NSW journos and their attack dogs at Family First want to blame anyone for Sam’s “lewd and tasteless” outburst they should blame Ash, Kip and Luttsy – not that anyone should be hung out to dry over what was nothing more than an attempt to lighten up an otherwise dour affair.

Personally, I thought it was quite funny, but then I wasn’t supporting NSW on the night.

Not as funny as when Shane Walker said of being named Broncos captain, “I haven’t been so excited since the night I got home from training and my wife was wearing her French maid outfit” but certainly a lot more funny than a train-smash Darren Lockyer came out with at a sportsman’s lunch a few years back.

And besides if we’re talking bad jokes, there was a far worse one on the night.

It went like this: “Seventeen NSW footballers walk onto a field …”

Boom tish.
