IF that is how Origin ends for Cooper Cronk, then what a way to go out.
There were no match-winning heroics from him in last night’s thrilling decider at Suncorp Stadium, but it was as good a performance as any from him.
As Queensland sealed their 11th series win in 12 years, he was key in claiming the victory.
Cronk said he was still unsure of his future, and that he did not know whether or not he was retiring from rugby league.
However if this is the end, as many league experts suspect, then even the Melbourne perfectionist might be happy with it as a last hurrah.
The No.7’s combination with the rest of the Maroons and Storm spine was the reason why the home side won.
From him to Cameron Smith to Billy Slater to debutant Cameron Munster, it was an awe-inspiring performance.
The halfback’s best moment came in the 26th minute when he produced a try assist that will go down in Origin folklore.
After a barnstorming run from bench weapon Josh Papalii, Cronk got his hands on the ball and put up one of the best kicks of his career.
Some experts described it as a “banana kick”, others labelled it the kind of punt that many AFL players would be jealous of.
His kick hit winger Valentine Holmes right on the chest, allowing the young gun to score his second try.
Johnathan Thurston has retired from State of Origin and Cronk remains a possibility of leaving the game behind.
The way it ended last night, it certainly could spur him on to leave the game behind.
However it would be an Origin retirement to remember.
