State of Origin great hit with multiple charges over pub bust-up

A State of Origin winning captain has been arrested and charged by police with multiple offences over a bust-up over the weekend.

Rugby league great Trevor Gillmeister has had a run-in with the law and has been hit with multiple police charges following an incident over the weekend.

Gillmeister, 61, was kicked out of a Brisbane pub on Friday for allegedly assaulting a staff member at the Stock Exchange Hotel in Brisbane’s CBD.

It’s also alleged Gillmeister became involved in a physical struggle with the attending police and was placed under arrest.

In a statement, Queensland police said officers “were stopped by a member of the public in relation to a physical disturbance inside the Charlotte St venue” just before midnight.

“Upon arrival officers were advised the man had been evicted after allegedly assaulting a staff member.

“It will then be alleged the man became involved in a physical struggle with police before being arrested and transported to a Brisbane City Watch-house.”

Gillmeister has been charged with being a public nuisance, assault and obstructing police. He is scheduled to appear before a Brisbane Magistrate’s Court on December 2.

Nicknamed ‘The Axe’, Gillmeister played more than 200 first grade games in his career spanning over a decade across the 1980s and 90s.

In 1991, his first year at the Broncos, he won the club’s player of the year award.

Gillmeister won two premierships with the Broncos in 1992 and 1993 and also made 22 appearances for Queensland in State of Origin, famously captaining the Maroons to an upset series win in 1995 under coach Paul Vautin.

The following year, Gillmeister captained Queensland in the Origin series opener but was dropped from the team and never again played for the Maroons.

Nearly three decades later, Daly Cherry-Evans suffered the exact same fate this year when Queensland coach Billy Slater dropped the veteran halfback for Tom Dearden in a bold selection call that helped the Maroons claim the Origin shield from NSW.

Gillmeister became the oldest player to debut for the Kangaroos at age 31 before retiring at the end of 1996. In 2000 he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his contribution to Australia’s standing in rugby league.
