Latrell Mitchell is a chance of returning from his hamstring injury at left centre, with Dally M leader Jye Gray expected to retain his spot at fullback as the Rabbitohs prepare to face arch rivals the Roosters on Friday night.
Mitchell has starred in the centres for his state and country but hasn’t been named in the role since he helped the Roosters win the 2019 grand final.
The attacking maestro has missed the start of the season but is set to return on Friday night for the grudge match against his former side.
“I know if I’m playing against Latrell then I wouldn’t want to see him at left centre, especially with the strike we’ve already got there,” Jai Arrow said.
“It’s going to be a great inclusion for us, and I’m excited to see the big fella play his first game of the year.
“He’s a pretty special talent with the ball in hand and he gives everyone around him so much confidence.”
Great mate Jack Wighton will likely shift to right centre if Mitchell is named out wide, with the former Dally M Medal winner urging the strike weapon to simply do what the team needs him to do.
“We just want him to do his job,” he said.
“He’s such a presence, so having him back in the side is a big lift for everybody.
“All we ask it that he does his job to the best of his ability. The first couple of games are always tough on the lungs.”
The Rabbitohs have the luxury of naming someone like Gray at fullback, with Mitchell needed in the outside backs given wingers Tyrone Munro and Alex Johnston are injured.
Gray has been brilliant to start the season and is atop the Dally M leaderboard after punching above his weight in the opening four rounds.
“He’s been pretty tremendous. We went to some schools yesterday and he was telling all the kids he’s the current Dally M leader,” Arrow said.
“They had no idea what he was talking about but we did. It’s good to see him growing in confidence as a player.
“I’m sure Wayne would find a spot for him no matter what.”
Wighton scolded Arrow for making up stories and praised Gray for his hot start to the year.
“He’s a humble kid and someone we love playing with,” he said.
“He’s a little energy ball and a very brave kid. The work he’s doing for us is unmatched.”
