Round 4: Broncos fans rate Matt Gillett best in win over Dragons; Sezer rules Titans and Cowboys savaged

Matt Gillett impressed the fans against the Dragons.

TWO tries in the opening 10 minutes might have been the highlight of Matt Gillett’s performance for the Broncos against the Dragons last Friday but there was more to his effort than that.

Lock Gillett made 145 metres in attack and that made him the second-best metre-eater on the field, behind only team-mate Josh McGuire (168m).

Broncos fans didn’t miss Gillett’s performance, either with 43 per cent rating him a nine in The Courier-Mail’s Fan Favourite survey. Another 28 per cent gave him an eight while 21 per cent awarded him an slightly over-the-top 10.

Fellow forwards Corey Parker and Sam Thaiday continue to score well from the fans with 43 per cent giving Thaiday an eight and 41 per cent rating Parker the same.

Surprise packets Gold Coast impressed fans with a one-point win over the Cowboys at Robina.

Five-eighth Aidan Sezer, who kicked the winning field goal, “won” most votes with one in four respondents rewarding him with a seven, eight or nine so we averaged that out at an eight.

Halfback Albert Kelly also scored an eight (32 per cent).

Cowboys fans are starting to lose patience with their players after just four weeks in which North Queensland has won one from four.

The fans savaged the Cowboys in this week’s survey after their meek loss to the Titans, with only winger Antonio Winterstein gaining a pass-mark seven from 28 per cent of respondents (although 28 per cent gave him a five).

Representative stars Brent Tate, Matt Scott, James TRamou and Tariq Sims were slammed with fives while superstar Johnathan Thurston scrambled a six.

This week the Broncos will take on the Eels at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night (Channel 9, live), the Titans play Storm on Sunday while Cowboys fans will have to wait until Monday night to see if their team can turn its season around against the Knights.
