Panthers star posts controversial video

The Penrith Panthers are investigating a social media video by NRL star Taylan May, from the inside of a luxury car appearing to do more than 90km/h in a residential area.

The NRL’s integrity unit has been made aware of the video, which has been doing the rounds on social media, after it was believed to have been posted just over a week ago to May’s Instagram stories.

May is not driving the car, and is not accused of any wrongdoing.

The driver in the video appears to have distinctive tattoos down his left arm, which May does not have.

In the video, the Audi R8 Quattro is seen speeding at up to 96km/h, according to the speedometer visible in the video, past what appears to be a school in a residential area.

In NSW, 50km/h speed limits apply to all built-up areas, unless other lower limits apply.

After almost reaching 100km/h, the car drastically brakes as it reaches a pedestrian crossing, with one passenger letting out an audible gasp, while another can be heard saying “holy moly, bra”.

The Audi appears to be travelling at a high speed as it passes cars travelling in the opposite direction, with vehicles parked along either side of the street.

The Panthers were made aware of the video on Sunday afternoon after it began circulating on social media.

Penrith had a bye this weekend, and they are set to face Wests Tigers in Bathurst on Saturday in Round 7.

The bye came at an opportune time for the Panthers, who will be hoping to have first-choice halves combination Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai back for the fixture.

Cleary hasn’t played since injuring his hamstring in Penrith’s Round 3 win over Brisbane.

Luai, meanwhile, came off the field with 12 minutes to play of the Panthers’ loss to Manly last week after a heavy collision.

Penrith are expected to welcome back second-rower Scott Sorensen from a knee injury suffered in the same game as Cleary.

The Panthers gave their playing squad time off during the bye week.

They face a Tigers side coming off back-to-back losses, including Sunday’s 24-12 defeat to St George Illawarra. In their corresponding fixture last year, the Tigers snapped a seven-game winless start to the season with a hard-fought 12-8 victory over the Panthers at a sodden Carrington Park in Bathurst.
