Newcastle could be on the hunt for a new NRLW fullback with superstar Tamika Upton returning to Queensland after requesting an immediate release from the remaining three years of her contract.
The 2023 Dally M Medallist and four-time premiership winner is expected to part ways with the club pending a release on compassionate grounds.
Upton, who was raised in Rockhampton, has already returned to Queensland to be closer to home after private family circumstances changed, which are understood to have taken an emotional toll on the 27 year old.
Her exit would end a successful three-year run at the Knights for Upton, which included the 2022 and 2023 NRLW premierships, a Dally M Medal and dual Karyn Murphy Medals.
During her time at the Knights Upton cemented her reputation as the best player in the women’s game.
And now her career options will be plentiful.
Upton started her career at the Broncos where she won two premierships, while the Titans and Cowboys are also options to explore to remain in Queensland close to family.
A cross-code switch to rugby union could also be on the cards.
Rugby Australia had previously sounded out Upton to gauge her interest in the rival code and those talks could again spark once she becomes available.
The Knights and Upton’s management have been sought for comment.
Meanwhile, it’s understood the Knights are in discussions to find a replacement for the Queensland fullback in time for next year’s expanded NRLW season.
The loss of Upton, who has two straight player of the year awards at the club, is a further blow to the Knights after losing NSW Origin forward Caitlan Johnston-Green to the Sharks in 2025.
