Newcastle’s NRLW premiership campaign has been dealt a hammer blow with scans confirming a season-ending knee injury to star signing and co-captain Hannah Southwell.

The former Sydney Roosters’ premiership-winning lock ruptured her ACL in the first half of the Knights’ Round 1 victory over Brisbane last weekend.

Southwell played for 20 minutes with the injury during the 32-14 win over the Broncos.

The Knights issued a statement on Tuesday, confirming the news.

“She (Southwell) now faces surgery and a lengthy recovery period, but will remain a big part of the Knights NRLW campaign for the season to come.”

Newcastle play the Titans on the Gold Coast on Sunday night and have named Simone Karpani in the No.13 jersey to replace the big-hitting Southwell.

The Knights remain a competition heavyweight thanks to an off-season recruitment spree which landed Southwell and former Broncos stars in co-captain Millie Boyle and Tamika Upton.

Southwell’s younger Jesse Southwell, 17, made a stunning NRLW debut against Brisbane and will again be calling the shots at halfback this weekend for the Knights.

The Broncos and Roosters will kick off Round 2 of the NRLW season on Saturday at Suncorp Stadium, with both sides naming unchanged starting lineups from the opening weekend.

Parramatta, coming off a 38-16 loss to defending champions the Roosters, host last season’s beaten grand finalists St George Illawarra at CommBank Stadium on Sunday.

The Dragons were impressive in their 26-12 win over the Titans last week, scoring five tries.
