The Australian team has been rocked by the death of Redcliffe Dolphins player Liam Hampson as Spanish police reveal more details around the tragedy.

According to Spanish media outlets, the police force’s working hypothesis is that Hampson accidentally fell from a height of 10 metres at the Sala Apolo nightclub.

Hampson, 24, had not been seen for 30 hours after disappearing while partying with a group of NRL players on Tuesday night.

Friends reportedly lost contact with the Redcliffe Dolphins player at around 5:30am in the morning, prompting desperate pleas from Gold Coast Titans player AJ Brimson and Brisbane Broncos duo Jordan Riki and Jesse Arthars.

Barcelona police on Thursday morning (AEDT) confirmed to 7News that a body believed to be Hampson’s was found on the floor of a nightclub.

El Pais and El Mundo report that the local law enforcement - The Mossos d’Esquadra - attended the scene and shared the theory with the local news associations.

It is understood that a handful of Australian players knew Hampson, including Brisbane forward Patrick Carrigan.

The devastating news comes only 48 hours before the Australian team are due to play Scotland in their second pool game in Coventry.

Players and officials attended a function in Coventry on Thursday morning (AEDT) where they were welcomed by city officials, having arrived earlier that day.

Both the Australian consulate and Hampson’s family have been contacted by Spanish authorities.

Hampson’s sister Tiarna shared a heartbreaking Instagram post on Thursday morning confirming she had received the “saddest news possible”.

“We are devastated to find out Liam had an accident and did not survive,” Tiarna wrote.

“We are so heartbroken. Liam was the best brother I ever could of asked for and made me a better person.

“We cannot express our grief.

“We cannot thank the boys he was travelling with enough for assisting with his search and made sure his last days were the best of his life. Going to miss you so much, Liam.”

The Dolphins rugby league club has been rocked by the death of Hampson, who just four weeks ago played for Redcliffe in their loss to Norths in the Queensland Cup grand final.

“It’s just terrible what’s happened. We can’t believe it,” a Dolphins spokesman said.

“Liam was full of life and really popular with the guys here at Redcliffe.

“He was a good player, he won us a game against Burleigh in the finals to get us into the grand final, he scored a try and changed the tempo of the game.

“After that game Liam had a conversation with Wayne Bennett (Dolphins NRL coach), who was impressed with his attitude.

“He was only small for a hooker but he really played above his weight and had great courage.

“Our thoughts go out to Liam’s family and friends.”

The loss of Hampson is the second tragedy to rock the Queensland rugby league fraternity. In August, former Ipswich Jets flyer Michael Purcell, who had a brief stint with the Melbourne Storm, died suddenly after a car crash in Brisbane.

Hampson was part of the New Zealand Warriors development system and played in the club’s under-20s team in 2017 after finishing school on the Gold Coast.

Former Tweed Heads Seagulls coach Ben Woolf said the Queensland league community would be shattered following the death of Hampson.

“I first met Liam when he was 13 and I taught him maths at Keebra,” he said.

“I coached him through school in Year 8 and 9 then he came back to Tweed after a stint with the Warriors.

“He played half-a-year with the Warriors under-20s in his first year out of school but didn’t get much of an opportunity and was living away from home so he made the decision to come back.

“We didn’t have any room with the Titans so he went to Tweed and then I started coaching back there in 2018. He stayed at Tweed until this year when he went to Redcliffe.

“Liam was a great kid, really happy and friendly, he always had a smiley face.

“He was a tough little fella. He always struggled size-wise from when he was a young kid, he was always little, but he was tough and willing.

“He was a great little runner of the footy who could turn a game, which he showed this year. He was a great competitor.

“He had a bad hamstring injury for a lot of this year but he came back and was a big part of Redcliffe turning their form around and making the grand final.

“I still can’t get my head around it. It’s going to rock Tweed and the whole league community. I’m sure he made a big impact at Redcliffe.

“He was such a likable guy and has done work as a teacher’s aide at a couple of schools in Redcliffe and Keebra Park. So many organisations are going to be knocked around by this.”
