SuperCoach NRL: 20 SuperCoach Winners and Losers from Raiders vs Cowboys, Souths vs Broncos

It was a big night for the underdogs with the Cowboys and Rabbitohs causing upsets, but did that translate to SuperCoach? See the 20 SuperCoach Winners and Losers from Friday Night Footy.

Trauma for Tigers but Bulldogs have rediscovered their bite | The Daily Telegraph NRL Podcast

It was a Friday night for the underdogs with both sides outside the top eight knocking off higher-placed opponents.

The Cowboys shrugged off any concerns about dealing with the Canberra cold with a dominant first half to put the Raiders to the sword.

In similar fashion, South Sydney opened up a 22-point lead before a couple of late tries flattered Brisbane in the end.

How did SuperCoach teams fare during the upsets? We take a look at the 20 Winners and Losers from Friday Night Footy.

SUPERCOACH WINNERS

1. Deine Mariner (98 pts) – Two tries late in the game is the definition of garbage time scoring, but his owners won’t care because he somehow almost reached the ton.

2. Damien Cook (94 pts) – His future with Souths came into question this week, but he showed why he hasn’t lost a step with a masterful display.

3. Payne Haas (82 pts) – A powerful performance from Haas who earned his points the old fashioned way. Needs more help in the front row.

4. Scott Drinkwater (90 pts) – The eye test didn’t really add up to the score, but eyes can be deceiving so owners will be very happy with his output.

5. Keaon Koloamatangi (79 pts) – His game has gone to another level since shifting to lock and was rewarded for his effort with a nice try.

6. Jordan Rapana (80 pts) – Like most of his games, there was good, there was not so good, and there was entertaining. A very strong game from a SC perspective.

7. Latrell Mitchell (75 pts) – Should’ve posted a higher score if not for a controversial sin bin. He looked zoned in and has cemented his Origin jersey.

8. Heilum Luki (77 pts) – A strong try in the first half set the tone for a good night for the young back-rower who can make his presence felt in the weeks to come.

9. Elliott Whitehead (74 pts) – Been such a consistent player for the Raiders since coming back from injury and is scoring tries at a good clip.

10. Pat Carrigan (67 pts) – This guy is a beast, pure and simple. Gets through his work every week and just doesn’t stop.

SUPERCOACH LOSERS

1. Richie Kennar (6 pts) – A lazy sin bin summed up his night. His job security has to come into question in the coming weeks.

2. Peter Mamouzelos (4 pts) – Played a handful of minutes and with Cameron Murray coming back and Damien Cook firing, his minutes don’t look like improving.

3. Jock Madden (15 pts) – Tried hard but it just wasn’t happening for him. Made a few mistakes and some poor choices while steering the ship.

4. Tom Starling (12 pts) – Went off with a failed HIA in the second half as he again played second fiddle to Danny Levi.

5. Kulikefi Finefeuiaki (19 pts) – Saw less than 30 minutes of play tonight after coming into the game when it was virtually over. A breakeven of -3 helps somewhat.

6. Trey Mooney (16 pts) – Was used as a straight swap for Joseph Tapine, but with just 22 minutes of game time, it was a tough watch for owners.

7. Tristan Sailor (20 pts) – Hasn’t had the most pleasant time filling in for Reece Walsh over the past fortnight. Found the going very tough.

8. Murray Taulagi (25 pts) – The Origin winger didn’t quite bring that form back for the Cowboys in a pretty quiet night for the gun.

9. Hudson Young (37 pts) – One of the premier backrowers in SuperCoach, but a few negative stats brought his score down.

10. Jack Wighton (27 pts) – His kicking game was superb, but it didn’t translate into a good score for SuperCoaches.

RABBITOHS VS BRONCOS

FULL-TIME - Rabbitohs 22-12

Deine Mariner made it a double with just minutes to play to add a bit of respectability to the scoreline, but it mattered little.

What did matter for the Rabbitohs late was Jai Arrow going down clutching at a shoulder after colliding with Jordan Riki.

It was South Sydney’s night however, winning their third game in a row with the Broncos slumping to three-straight defeats.

Here are the top SuperCoach scores from full-time:

70th minute - Rabbitohs 22-6

The first blemish of the night for South Sydney’s defence.

Deine Mariner beat Alex Johnston all ends up from a tight window near the sideline, before a lovely diving effort in the corner evades the last-ditch attempt from Latrell Mitchell to touch down before being bundled out.

It gives the Broncos some hope coming into the final 10 minutes.

60th minute - Rabbitohs 22-0

Emotions have spilt over here after a pretty ordinary effort from Jordan Riki.

He shoulder charged an unexpecting Cameron Murray without the ball and sent him flying, prompting Latrell Mitchell to come racing in and let him know his thoughts.

Murray has come from the field for a HIA with both Mitchell and Riki sent to the sin bin.

50th minute - Rabbitohs 22-0

Selwyn Cobbo passed his HIA after the high shot from Richie Kennar, who returned to the field from the sin bin in the first minute of the second half.

The rain continues to tumble down and the Rabbitohs have had the best of the early running in the second stanza, with poor handling killing the Broncos.

They eventually make them pay with Alex Johnston climbing to number two on the tryscoring ranks with a burst down the sideline on the back of a lovely cutout from Latrell Mitchell to pile more pain on the visitors.

HALFTIME - Rabbitohs 18-0

Richie Kennar got very lazy there, sticking an arm out and collecting Selwyn Cobbo with a stiff arm to earn 10 minutes in the sin bin.

Another piece of brilliance from Latrell Mitchell to execute a one-on-one steal with the Broncos deep on their line. Their scramble defence with 12 men has been superb.

Just as it looked like Brisbane had their first points of the night, Tristan Sailor’s pass to Ezra Mam was ruled forward by referee Adam Gee, who was right on the spot.

30th minute - Rabbitohs 18-0

Latrell Mitchell is mounting an incredible case to Michael Maguire.

He has started incredible tonight, with a bomb forcing an error from Selwyn Cobbo, before scoring the next set by storming his way over the top of Jock Madden and Kotoni Staggs.

The Rabbitohs have been electric to start this game and the Broncos have looked a long way off the pace as they struggle to contain the home side’s kicking game in the wet.

A burst from the Broncos in their best moment of the game came unstuck with a great chase from Jacob Gagai to dislodge the ball from Ezra Mam.

20th minute - Rabbitohs 12-0

You got the feeling that South Sydney had to be the first to score otherwise it could all unravel for them.

It all worked for the Rabbitohs with Damien Cook catching the markers napping off a fast play the ball to open the scoring.

Tristan Sailor couldn’t contain the hooker and Brendan Piakura lost all his bearings in a lazy piece of play from the Broncos.

Another chance was beautifully taken by Souths, with Cody Walker putting a chip kick on a dime for Keaon Koloamatangi who leapt to perfection with a great catch to double the lead.

10th minute - 0-all

South Sydney had the best of the early chances with a few sets on Brisbane’s line, but full credit to the Broncos for holding solid.

A heads-up play from Jai Arrow to offload to a flying Latrell Mitchell saw him make a huge burst, only to be brought down just metres from the line.

He fended off Tristan Sailor with ease and showed plenty of toe down the sideline.

7.55PM: Corey Oates is the lone omission for tonight’s intriguing clash between South Sydney and Brisbane.

The winger is a late scratching, replaced by former Rabbitoh Josiah Karapani (CTW $204,300).

It’s been bucketing down in Sydney all day, so whoever can play to the conditions best should prevail.

The Rabbitohs have been given a boost with inspirational captain Cameron Murray (2RF $567,400) to return from the interchange bench.

RAIDERS VS COWBOYS

FULL-TIME - Cowboys 34-16

It looked like the Raiders could go back-to-back, but a dropped ball from Hudson Young all-but ended their comeback hopes.

It caps a disappointing night for the home side.

Here are the top SuperCoach scores from full-time:

70th minute - Cowboys 34-16

Just when it looked like the Raiders might be able to string a couple of tries together, the Cowboys swiftly close the door on them.

A nice offload from Thomas Mikaele unlocks Scott Drinkwater, who combines with Reece Robson for a long-range try to seal the victory.

Canberra gets the ball back from the kick-off, Sebastian Kris works the short-side and allows Xavier Savage to race down the touchline and finish with a spectacular aerial put-down.

Tom Starling failed his HIA.

Elliott Whitehead goes over soon after to keep them with a shot at a miracle with 10 minutes to play.

60th minute - Cowboys 28-6

An error from the set after points proved costly for the Cowboys as the Raiders finally get over the line.

Jordan Rapana splits the defensive pairing of Chad Townsend and Viliami Vailea to score what was a pretty soft try.

It finally gives the home fans something to cheer about.

50th minute - Cowboys 28-0

It’s been a better start from the Raiders.

They’ve asked questions of the Cowboys defence and have been building some pressure.

But the last pass just won’t stick and Hudson Young drops it close to the line.

The halftime talk has worked in some respects, but they’re still without points and time is winding down.

Just as we sing their praise, Chad Townsend puts in a grubber behind the line and there was nobody around Valentine Holmes, who easily scores and converts his own try.

HALFTIME - Cowboys 22-0

Cue the clown music for the Raiders.

Ricky’s gum is getting worked to the max after they manage to lose 40m on a single play and hand over possession.

It’s not as if the Raiders haven’t had their fair share of chances in the first half. The desperation of the Cowboys and scramble defence has been exceptional, while the same cannot be said for Canberra.

To top it off, the Raiders booed off their side as they came into the sheds.

30th minute - Cowboys 22-0

The pressure is relentless from North Queensland as they pepper Canberra’s line over and over.

Eventually they succumb once again as Kyle Feldt bags a double in the most extravagant of fashion.

He leaps from the field of play, avoids being bundled into touch and puts the ball millimetres from the touchline to score one of the tries of the season.

That was brilliant.

20th minute - Cowboys 18-0

That was far too easy.

Tom Dearden feeds Heilum Luki close to the line, and a big left-foot step and fend on Kaeo Weekes to stretch the lead out to 12.

Weekes caps off an awful two minutes by booting the ensuing kick-off out on the full.

It’s Jeremiah Nanai this time as he gets on the end of a Chad Townsend grubber.

He simply wanted that ball more than the Raiders defenders, and Ricky would not be happy with that.

10th minute - Cowboys 6-0

Emre Guler, Ricky Stuart’s X-factor, had the first chance of the game after a Jordan Rapana flick pass kept the ball alive on last, but he is ruled to have been held up.

Canberra has looked the far better team, making metres at will and having the Cowboys on the back foot through the opening passages of play.

North Queensland had their own chance through Kyle Feldt, and after what seemed like an age, the Bunker goes against the on-field call and confirms a try.

Jordan Rapana and Xavier Savage both couldn’t contain a short Tom Dearden grubber with the ball falling into the hands of Feldt.

6PM: The Viking clap is over and we are underway for the first match of Friday Night Footy.

Who will get the choccies, Canberra or North Queensland?

5.30PM: Canberra comes into this game as favourites, largely due to the conditions the men from sunny Townsville will have to endure.

It’s been a bludger of a day in terms of temperature and rain, and the nation’s capital will have a frosty reception for the Cowboys.

They were shocking at home last week against a dominant Warriors side, while the Raiders have had the chance to freshen up with a bye.

How they’ll manage to deal with single digit temperatures against a grinding, battle-hardened green machine is another question.

Both teams sit on seven wins, however the Cowboys are four points behind on the ladder due to Canberra having two byes.

Essentially it shapes as a huge fixture in terms of top eight implications.

5PM: The Cowboys will have to wait a little bit longer for the return of Jordan McLean.

After being named to make his return from a calf injury on Tuesday, he has since been ruled out with Harrison Edwards (2RF/FRF $364,500) holding his place in the side. Griffin Neame (FRF $394,500) will come from the bench.

In a move that Stevie Wonder saw coming, Ricky Stuart has elevated Emre Guler (FRF $345,300) to the starting 13 and relegated Josh Papali’i (FRF $399,200) to the interchange.

EARLIER: Hello and welcome to out live rolling coverage of the Friday night footy action.

The Cowboys head to a cold Canberra to start things off tonight and then the Rabbitohs host the Broncos and there’s plenty of SuperCoach interest in both games.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Scott Drinkwater: Was a very popular captaincy pick last round and produced a fizzer scoring just 45 points against the Warriors. Has never scored above 59 points against the Raiders and is starting to lose value. With the bye in round 16 plenty will be looking to sell Drinkwater after this week.

Valentine Holmes: Far from bringing his Maroons form to the gamer last week, Holmes looked gassed early and it showed on the defensive end with the usual solid defender missing eight tackles. Holmes scored 92 points last time he played the Raiders at GIO Stadium, what his owners would give for a repeat!

Joe Tapine: Winter is coming which can only mean one thing - so is Joe Tapine. As the weather cools Tapine, a renowned second-half of the season performer, gets hot and the big unit comes into this game in form having scored 75 points against the Roosters in round 12 then 110 points against the Dolphins in round 13. Available for $616K the time to Tapine is now.

Ethan Strange: A hot favourite to win rookie-of-the-year honours, Strange is nonetheless nearing his SuperCoach shelf life. I’d hold for now, his BE of 71 is high but not ludicrous, and not only does he play in the tough round 16 bye but he plays against the lowly Wests Tigers. Sell in round 17 ahead of Storm showdown.

Kaeo Weekes: The makeshift half has been in fine form since being called up to fill in for the injured Jamal Fogarty with a 5RA of 63PPG and a 3RA of 69.3PPG. Forecast to hit around $550K after the Wests Tigers game I’d be looking to sell then and pocket some handy cash. At least I would if I were smart enough to have bought Weekes when Fogarty was injured. Which I wasn’t. Boo hoo.

Latrell Mitchell: ‘Trell’ was immense against the Titans last week scoring 150 points with a try, multiple assists, a boatload of goals and sundry other stats too. There has to be a fear for owners that he is playing his way into a NSW jersey and hence will be unavailable for rounds 16 and 19 but that’s just the talk of a salty non-owner no doubt.

Cody Walker: Is Walker ‘on’? It would certainly seem so as he comes into this game after scoring 99 against the Cowboys and 103 against the Titans. Maybe he just really likes playing Queensland teams? Either way there’s cause to buy into the South Sydney star who is priced just under $600K.

Cameron Murray: The South Sydney skipper returns after a lengthy injury lay-off via the bench. Interest in Murray is far more about Origin than SuperCoach as a strong game for the Rabbitohs should propel him into the Blues.

Pat Carrigan: How boringly well is Pat Carrigan going? The Brisbane workhorse has an average of 66.6PPG, a 5RA of 66.2PPG and a 3RA of 68PPG. What captain Pat lacks in upside - he very rarely reaches triple figures, he makes up for with consistency - he very rarely scores below 60.
