SuperCoach NRL: 20 Winners and Losers from Dragons vs Warriors, Eels vs Dolphins

A pair of massive upsets saw some bumper scores and some big-name flops leaving SuperCoaches scratching their heads. See the 20 SuperCoach Winners and Losers from Friday Night Footy.

SuperCoach NRL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 7

If you follow the upsets it was a night to savour with both underdogs scoring huge wins.

St George Illawarra showed plenty of early grit to overpower the Warriors who were brought back to earth with an almighty thud.

The hot conditions proved too much for a big Parramatta forward back to bear, as they were torn to shreds by the Dolphins in the second half.

It’s no surprises to see plenty of Dragons and Dolphins among the top scorers from the night, but who were the major SuperCoach winners and losers?

We take a look at the 20 to consider for your round eight trades.

SUPERCOACH WINNERS

1. Jack Bostock (118 pts) - 11,237 SuperCoaches traded him out ahead of this game. They’re all wishing they could have their time again.

2. Zac Lomax (93 pts) - He just keeps on delivering. Has only scored below 93 just twice this season.

3. Max Plath (93 pts) - Boosted by two tries, but he’s locking down a spot in this Dolphins side and looking good in doing so.

4. Trai Fuller (73 pts) - Expect his ownership to surge next week after he showed why he’s the man to fill in for the Hammer.

5. Ben Hunt (96 pts) - When he is on, he can rack up SuperCoach points for fun. Hunt was exceptional.

6. Jeremy Marshall-King (73 pts) - His score doesn’t reflect just how dominant he was at times.

7. Raymond Faitala-Mariner (56 pts) - Sneakily produced a very good score in relation to his price.

8. Mikaele Ravalawa (78 pts) - Back to his best and posting a strong score. Looked dangerous.

9. Will Penisini (81 pts) - Had a slow start to the year in SC but has now put together a very strong fortnight.

10. Addin Fonua-Blake (68 pts) - Base points strong. One of the few highlights from the Warriors tonight.

SUPERCOACH LOSERS

1. Adam Pompey (3 pts) - Saw just five minutes of action. Strange move to have both him and Paul Roache on the bench.

2. Marcelo Montoya (17 pts) - The SuperCoach score he finished with reflected the game he had. Not his best.

3. Clint Gutherson (28 pts) - We’ve seen him fall flat after big scores in 2024, here’s hoping he rises next week for owners.

4. Kyle Flanagan (19 pts) - We know he has a low score in him and tonight was one of those nights.

5. Jackson Ford (30 pts) - Two below-par scores in a row will have SuperCoaches questioning their stance on him.

6. Sean Russell (13 pts) - Went close to scoring, but it’s just not happening for him in SC this year.

7. Blaize Talagi (10 pts) - Saw 19 minutes of action but couldn’t make much of an impression with the Eels forwards getting hammered.

8. Jacob Laban (8 pts) - The Warriors bench was used sparingly tonight, and Laban’s score was a victim.

9. Ryan Matterson (33 pts) - His minutes and SC scoring has taken a massive hit this year. Tough going for owners.

10. Kenny Bromwich (30 pts) - One of the few Dolphins that didn’t have a plate on the feast of the Eels.

EELS vs DOLPHINS

FULL-TIME - Dolphins 40-16

Trai Fuller has made his case for more regular first grade football with a brilliant effort to help Jack Bostock to his second try of the night.

He grubbered ahead, then in a diving effort was able to get another foot to the ball ahead of Clint Gutherson to which Bostock touched down just before the dead-ball line.

They scored from the very next set with more slow defenders caught out, with Isaiya Katoa putting Bostock into space, who passed inside to Tesi Niu to complete his double.

Bostock soon after had his third as the Dolphins finished with another blitz of a sore and sorry Eels.

It was a perfect example of how the second half played out. The Dolphins looked energetic and hungry to compete, while the Eels just fell flat.

Here are the top SuperCoach scores from the second game of Friday Night Footy, plus stay tuned for our Winners and Losers from both games.

70th minute - Dolphins 30-10

Put a fork in the Eels, they are done.

The fifth try in the space of 14 minutes to the Dolphins has ended any hopes of a win at their temporary ‘home’ ground.

This time it was Kodi Nikorima with a perfect grubber pounced upon by Jake Averillo as the defence just watched on.

Parramatta has been blown away in this second half and there are a lot of questions about their credibility as a finals contender moving forward.

Max Plath has 85 SuperCoach points with Jeremy Marshall-King sitting on a well-earned score of 72 points.

60th minute - Dolphins 26-10

There’s still 20 minutes to go but you get the feeling this one is as good as over.

Jeremy Marshall-King has single-handedly turned the game on its head with his pace out of dummy half making Parramatta’s middle forward look very sluggish.

They have no answers and look absolutely gone.

Max Plath has two tries in quick succession to continue his solid start to 2024.

JMK is up to 70 SuperCoach points.

52nd minute - Dolphins 16-10

Quite a soft penalty is given away by the Dolphins for an alleged late hit on Dylan Brown after he kicked the ball.

After taking what seemed forever to take the penalty shot at goal, Clint Gutherson eventually adds the two points to push the margin to six.

The converted try advantage doesn’t last long with a number of repeat sets proving too much to handle, with Isaiya Katoa giving a perfect short ball to Tesi Niu, leaving Bailey Simonsson and Sean Russell grasping at thin air.

Soft defence around the ruck allows the Dolphins to go back-to-back after Jeremy Marshall-King catches the markers out, finds Josh Kerr who in turn hands it off to Trai Fuller to score and take the lead for the first time.

HALFTIME - Eels 8-4

It’s a game that won’t win any awards or have people clamouring to watch the replay, but it’s a close contest if nothing else.

The hot conditions have really sapped the energy of both teams and it looks like whoever will last the longest will come out on top.

Two tries to the Eels were countered with a late try to the Dolphins to keep them within range at the break.

Here are the top SuperCoach scores after 40 minutes.

35th minute - Eels 8-4

The Dolphins are over for their first of the night. Isaiya Katoa threw a lovely ball over the top in close range and Jack Bostock continues his good tryscoring form to start the season.

They needed points before the break and the tall winger delivers.

30th minute - Eels 8-0

The Bunker is called into action with tries to both the Eels and Dolphins denied. Correctly denied I might add.

A penalty takes the Eels down-field and they’re over again.

Offloads are killing the Dolphins. The ball comes out to Will Penisini and he breaks through an ordinary tackle by Tesi Niu to score out wide.

Sean Russell can’t convert.

Shaun Lane has 52 SC points, Joey Lussick sits on 35.

20th minute - Eels 4-0

A very simple play from the Eels finally gives the fans in Darwin something to cheer about.

A regulation pass from Joey Lussick to Shaun Lane sees the second rower spin his way through a Kodi Nikorima attempted tackle to score.

Sean Russell has taken over the kicking duties, and judging by his first attempt, they might opt to go back to Clint Gutherson if they score again.

10th minute - 0-all

Wayne Bennett was a late scratching for the Dolphins with Kristian Woolf getting an early taste of the big chair.

It’s been a dour contest early on with Parramatta having the best of the chances, but neither side unable to trouble the scorer.

7.55PM: Parramatta will line up with their 17 players as chosen on Tuesday, while the Dolphins have made one change.

Oryn Keeley (2RF $238,900) comes onto the interchange with Jarrod Wallace dropping back to 18th man.

Popular cheapie Blaize Talagi (CTW $275,000) is back on the bench for the Eels and with a breakeven of just six points, it’s not hard to see why he’s one of the most owned players in the game.

Trai Fuller (FLB $204,300) is the little-known replacement for Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow.

The 27-year-old played just the one game of NRL last season and scored a try on debut. 118 SuperCoaches have traded him in the hopes he can have a similar impact to the Hammer.

DRAGONS vs WARRIORS

FULL-TIME - Dragons 30-12

A courageous showing from the Dragons has them firing ahead of the annual Anzac Day clash.

They were under the pump early and should’ve trailed by plenty, but their defence held the Warriors off and they swiftly took full control of the game in Wollongong.

Zac Lomax and Ben Hunt were the stars who turned an early 6-0 deficit into a 30-6 advantage in the second half.

72nd minute - Dragons 30-12

In a play that sums up the night, Tohu Harris was over the tryline but couldn’t ground the ball due to the desperation of a number of Dragons defenders.

They finally trouble the scorer just a few players later however, with Dallin Watene-Zelezniak producing a miracle put-down in the corner despite the best efforts of Tyrell Sloan to bundle him into touch.

65th minute - Dragons 30-6

A downtown penalty against Jacob Liddle gave the Warriors their first good set attacking the Dragons line in the second half, but it amounts to nothing.

Shaun Johnson decided the right time for a no-look pass was last tackle when down by 18.

A few sets later an SJ fumble falls into the hands of Ben Hunt who gives it to Tyrell Sloan who races away for a near 100-metre try.

55th minute - Dragons 24-6

Will the tide turn?

A Roger Tuivasa-Sheck brain fade on a short dropout allows the Dragons to push their lead out to three converted tries.

The Warriors look like shot ducks at the moment and Shaun Johnson gave RTS a solid spray after he touched the ball before it went the required 10 metres.

Ben Hunt has surged up to 85 SuperCoach points.

45th minute - Dragons 22-6

Zac Lomax take a bow.

The departing Dragon starts the second half with a moment of brilliance, leaping high over a stationary Marcelo Montoya to score with the very first set. They now lead by 16 and will be very hard to run down.

HALFTIME - Dragons 16-6

Shaun Johnson is shoved off by Ben Hunt and the Dragons halfback scores their third try in the space of 11 minutes to completely turn this game on its head.

A heads-up play with seconds on the clock sees Zac Lomax slot a two-point field goal to stretch the lead to 10.

To say the Warriors could’ve been up by two or three tries early is an understatement.

They’ve completely gone to water when the Dragons finally got their hands on the ball in what hasn’t been close to the defensive effort required of a premiership contender.

Full credit to the Dragons. They showed resilience early on and have been rewarded with a comfortable halftime lead.

33rd minute - Dragons 8-6

The Warriors are again caught short out wide.

They gift the Dragons another set on their line after a Marcelo Montoya dropped ball and it’s Mikaele Ravalawa who cashes in.

Somehow St George Illawarra has the lead. The Warriors will be wondering where this half has gone wrong for them.

29th minute - Warriors 6-4

You’ve got to say that’s pretty soft.

The Dragons have only had limited chances in the first half, but some nice lead-up play and a strong line from Moses Suli is enough to break through a soft attempt at tackle from Rocco Berry to get the Dragons on the board.

Shaun Johnson still leads the SC tally with 46. Suli rises to 38.

25th minute - Warriors 6-0

Pressure was unrelenting from the Warriors with continual set restarts and opportunities on the Dragons line, but they couldn’t crack them and a Jacob Liddle intercept eases the pressure.

A couple of penalties have helped the Dragons get some much-needed possession inside Warriors territory.

15th minute - Warriors 6-0

What happened there?!

A horrendous defensive miscommunication between Kyle Flanagan and Moses Suli on their goal line has allowed Shaun Johnson to score the easiest of tries.

SJ backers were giggling to themselves with how that panned out. He rises to 34 points with Wayde Egan on the same score.

10th minute - 0-all

The Warriors have had the best of the early territory and have been able to put in a couple of attacking kicks, but have yet to produce a result on the scoreboard.

The Dragons have been strong defensively in keeping the Warriors at bay and getting into a back-and-forth grind to start the contest.

Mitch Barnett has 14 early SC points.

6PM: Friday night footy is off and running with St George Illawarra hosting New Zealand at WIN Stadium.

Who’s your pick?

5.30PM: Who are you rolling with in your SuperCoach team from tonight’s games?

I’ve gone with Te Maire Martin as the lone choice in the opener (5/8/FLB $363,000). The fact he has locked up the five-eighth role makes him a money-making option in my book.

In the second it’s J’maine Hopgood (2RF $730,800) and Joey Lussick (HOK $413,600) who will carry my hopes of a strong score.

A host of New Zealand Warriors player feature in plenty of teams and with the form they’re in, it could be a very shrewd move.

Warriors players are in hot demand.

5PM: The Dragons have wasted no time in parachuting their new recruit into things.

Fa’amanu Brown (5/8/HOK $313,500) comes onto the St George Illawarra bench, although SuperCoaches haven’t rushed to bring him in.

Just 13 have put their faith in the new Dragon, who has a breakeven of 32 points. Jesse Marschke drops off the bench.

Chanel Harris-Tavita is out for the Warriors with Paul Roache (5/8 $204,300) replacing him on the interchange.

You’d be a brave man to include him in your side, with his only minutes likely to come if there’s an injury or the result is wrapped up early.

EARLIER: Welcome to our live coverage of Friday’s Round 7 clash between the Dragons and the Warriors, followed by the Eels and Dolphins road trip to Darwin.

And SuperCoaches are backing the Warriors to go big against the Dragons, with three New Zealand stars among the most purchased players of the round.

Warriors five-eighth Te Maire Martin is the third most purchased player of the week as a quick cash grab, on the back of his 56 break-even.

Charnze Nicholl-Klokstad is another popular buy, as is Shaun Johnson, who has a three round average of 94, and is one of the most backed players for the captaincy or vice captaincy

For the Dragons, Zac Lomax is among the most popular purchases of the round on the back of his fantastic form on the wing. But with Jack Bird ruled out of the game, will Lomax still score well at centre?

In our second game of the night, all eyes will be on Parramatta super sub Blaize Talagi, who just needs to take the field to see a price rise thanks to his break-even of 6.

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is set for lengthy stint on the sidelines which sees Trai Fuller come in at fullback for his second NRL game. Jack Bostock, Thomas Flegler and Shaun Lane are among the most sold players of the week.
