Bevan French has lauded the English Super League’s inclusion in Las Vegas a success after inspiring Wigan to a 48-24 thrashing of Warrington at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday.
The Warriors ran riot in Las Vegas, running in 42 unanswered points to continue Wolves coach Sam Burgess’ American nightmare, after he was a late arrival in America following a visa delay.
In the first game of the Las Vegas quadruple header, the reigning English Super League champions put on an attacking clinic, with French at the centre of it.
The former Parramatta Eel scored a try and had a hand in three others as he cut the Wolves’ defence to shreds through the middle, along with ex-St George Illawarra Dragon Jai Field.
French was happy to play his part in promoting the English game.
“It’s such a privilege to be on this stage and to be here with all these people on the other side of the world,’’ French said.
“It’s been outstanding. It’s probably been busier than what we’re used to, doing promotions, but that’s what is expected when you’re coming to try and grow the sport like Super League is over here, and we’re all privileged and thankful for the NRL having us a part of it.”
ENGLAND FANS ON THE BOOS
The Wigan and Warrington fans were separated behind the goalposts at either end of the Allegiant Stadium field, but the Wolves faithful had little to cheer about. They booed their own team as they left the field trailing 24-0 at halftime, while the Wigan fans locked arms – from young to old — happily chanting ‘you’re sh-t’ constantly to Warrington.
The Wolves scored four consolation tries late in the game, including a length-of-the-field effort from Matty Ashton, who ran 90m — the final 10 without his left boot.
French didn’t believe the lopsided scoreline took away from the spectacle.
“As you can tell it’s been a success, the crowd coming over from the UK has been a success,” the 2023 English Man of Steel said.
“I think they’ve been the loudest all down The Strip. Personally, I see it as a success.
“We had a big win here today but probably let the foot off the throat, so there’s a couple of things we want to work on.’’
HISTORY MAKER
Wigan forward Tyler Dupree created history by becoming the first player to score in the 2025 Las Vegas spectacular.
He was only on the field for 60 seconds when he scooped up a loose ball to dive over and score in the 17th minute.
Wigan piled on the misery for Warrington early with Australian duo Abbas Miski and French both crossing, before Harry Smith made it 24-0 at halftime.
The second half just became embarrassing for the Wolves as French and Field ran riot.
A highlight was a 20-metre spiral pass from Field to Jake Wardle to score in the corner.
Warrington coach Burgess endured a delayed start to his US trip following a visa bungle, but that was nothing like the heartache he experienced at Allegiant Stadium.
The loss handed Burgess his first defeat of the season having won his opening two games with Wigan also now sitting at two wins from three games.
