THE Melbourne Storm are hopeful star prop Jesse Bromwich may miss only 2-3 weeks despite his dislocated thumb puncturing the skin.
The New Zealand international came from the field after just 10 minutes in Friday night’s 12-6 win over the Bulldogs.
It was initially feared he would miss 6-8 weeks.
The club expects official results on Monday, but initial analysis shows no break to the bone and the club is confident Bromwich can return for round four as long as the puncture wound heals without infection.
“It is a big blow, huge. He didn’t even hesitate to come off,” Storm coach Craig Bellamy said at the post-match press conference.
“As soon as he was in the tackle, and it was a pretty innocuous tackle it didn’t look like anything, but all of a sudden he was headed for the sideline which is not like him at all so he knew he’d done some bad damage.
“He’s dislocated it – I don’t know whether he’s busted it or not but he’s dislocated it, it’s come through the skin so he’s obviously looked down – I think he actually put his hand and felt the bone sticking out with his thumb sort of drooping down, that’s why he knew there was something wrong so I imagine that’s going to be a fair few weeks.”
In other serious injuries and judiciary news from the weekend:
* Greg Inglis (ACL) is expected to miss the entire season;
* Kevin Proctor (shoulder) will go for scans and is expected to spend time on the sideline.
* Newcastle youngster Dylan Phythian went down with no-one around him, with fears he’s done his ACL.
* Martin Taupau and Addin Fonua-Blake (shoulder charges) are facing three weeks, reduced to two with early guilty pleas.
