What's the Buzz: NRL club health check

These are the images from the car-crash saga that left Broncos star Ezra Mam fighting for his NRL career.

Mam’s Ford Ranger is officially up for sale with the once-pristine black ute now a banged-up wreck, having been dispatched to a Brisbane car lot for auction next week.

Declared a “statutory write-off”, the vehicle at the centre of Mam’s road accident last October has been transferred to Eagle Farm, where an auction will take place this Tuesday.

Images obtained by this masthead show the 2023 Ford Ranger sitting beside hundreds of other cars in a crumpled mess, tangible evidence of the scandal that sent Mam’s NRL and Broncos career into freefall.

The Brisbane auction house has started taking bids on the written-off wreckage and its sale will close the door on a harrowing chapter for Brisbane’s grand-final five-eighth.

Images show contents of the vehicle largely untouched since the events of October 18, when Mam crashed head-on with an Uber taxi that contained a mother and her four-year-old daughter.

The front end is heavily damaged with both headlights and grill panel smashed. The driver’s side door is dented and scratched.

A wooden item in the back of the ute, captured by Channel 9 at the time of the crash, remains in the tray.

The interior shows the impact of the crash, with the driver’s side airbag having been deployed. A large side airbag covering both sets of side windows is also visible.

A set of car keys are resting in the centre console.

A black bucket and cardboard box remain on the back seats - Mam was understood to be moving house at the time of the accident - with various other items strewn on the floor behind the driver’s seat.

A 2023 Ford Ranger varies in price from $30,000 to $80,000.

Mam was alleged to have failed a road drugs test following the incident. The Broncos young gun later pleaded guilty to two charges of dangerous driving - one count of driving while a relevant drug is present in blood and a second offence of driving without a licence.

Mam, who turned 22 in January, was fined $850 and banned from driving for six months by a Queensland Magistrates court.

The NRL threw the book at Mam, hitting the Brisbane playmaker with a $30,000 sanction and a nine-match suspension, while the Broncos went harder, issuing a $90,000 fine.

Mam checked into rehab following the crash and spent time working on a Brisbane building site as part of his reformation before returning to Broncos training last month.

New Broncos coach Michael Maguire was furious at the time of the incident and has vowed to crack down on player conduct this season in his bid to deliver Brisbane’s first premiership since 2006.

There was a push for Brisbane to tear up Mam’s $4 million contract and while Maguire is standing by the Indigenous ace, he says the Queensland Origin hopeful won’t simply walk back into an NRL starting spot.

Maguire insists Mam has been shaken by the ordeal and learned some harsh lessons.

“Ezra is continually working on himself now,” the Broncos coach told this masthead in an exclusive interview a fortnight ago.

“He has had to take a lot of lessons from what he has been through and one thing for ‘Ez’, he is looking to influence, not only himself but the people around him.

“He has been working extremely hard at training. He understands what he has been through. He is making sure he is giving to the players as much as he can because of what happened and that’s all I can ask of him.

“Right now, he will just train with us, that’s all he has to focus on.”

Asked about Mam’s mental health today, Maguire said: “He is still working through everything. Look, Ezra has made mistakes and he has been away and looked at himself. He is aware of the circumstances, he has had to go to work on a building site and he got on the tools for a period. He got a lot out of the experience which is important.

“People face adversity every day. It tests their character and people have to deal with the situations they have been through. No doubt he will do that and it will be up to him to decide how his career will look moving forward.

“Everyone in life faces a challenge and it’s up to Ezra now to respond to this challenge.

“You can always bounce back if you choose to and you do it the right way.

“I’ve spoken to him a number of times and he is keen to make amends, very much so.”
