Premiership-winning fullback Brett Hodgson is returning to the Wests Tigers as part of Benji Marshall’s revamped coaching staff.

Hodgson will form part of Marshall’s staff next year, the pair joining forces to help lift the club off the bottom of the ladder.

Hodgson and Marshall were teammates in the Tigers’ 2005 premiership win but they face a mountainous task to lift the club back into title contention given recent results - the club won a third consecutive wooden spoon this season.

“Brett has experience both as a head coach and an assistant coach, across both codes, and he will be a great addition to our coaching team,” Marshall said.

“He is honest, hardworking, and has a great knowledge and feel for the game.”

Hodgson was most recently on Eddie Jones’ staff with the Wallabies, part of a coaching apprenticeship that has taken him around the globe.

He served as a coaching consultant at Hull FC and Widnes in Super League, and then an assistant with Widnes.

He returned to the Tigers in 2018 as an assistant coach before returning to England to take charge of Hull FC.

After stepping down by mutual consent, he joined Jones as part of his staff with England and then the Wallabies.

His return to the Tigers came after assistant Robbie Farah opted to step down from his role as an assistant to Marshall.

“We have an outstanding group of young, talented players, and the squad will be strengthened with the addition of some high-quality new signings,” Hodgson said.

“I’m looking forward to contributing as we build a successful future for this great club.”

Chief executive Shane Richardson conducted a comprehensive search for his replacement and the club arrived on Hodgson, who played 103 games for the Tigers and played fullback in their one and only premiership win.

Having formed their coaching roster, Richardson and Marshall will turn their attention back to strengthening their roster with Brisbane back rower Kobe Hetherington still locked in talks with the club.

Hetherington has played 78 games for the Broncos but has been given permission to explore his options on the open market.
