The Broncos have raided Queensland’s State of Origin team to secure a successor for departed football chief Ben Ikin.

Maroons team manager Joe McDermott will join the Broncos as the club’s new football manager following Ikin’s appointment as CEO of the Queensland Rugby League.

McDermott has worked with the Queensland Origin team for 13 years and is currently part of Billy Slater’s support staff. He has also worked in game development for the QRL.

McDermott worked with Broncos coach Kevin Walters during Walters’ four years in charge of the Maroons.

The Broncos were rocked by the sudden departure of Ikin less than two years after being appointed head of football, a job which was later retitled head of football operations.

Now they have replaced him with McDermott in the traditional football manager role.
