NRL 2022: Trent Robinson re-signs with Sydney Roosters until end of 2028

Trent Robinson is on track to achieve one of the rarest milestones in Rugby League history after re-signing with the Sydney Roosters until the end of 2028.

He will become just the third coach in 114 years to achieve the historic milestone.

After securing a new long-deal on Tuesday, the Sydney Roosters’ Trent Robinson will join Wayne Bennett and Craig Bellamy as the only coaches in history to have coached 15 years or more at the one club.

Bennett coached Brisbane over 25 years while Bellamy has been with Melbourne for 20 seasons.

In an incredible show of faith and confidence, the Roosters have extended Robinson by another five years. The Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield broke the story first online.

Robinson is currently under contract until the end of 2023 but the new deal will have Robinson as Roosters coach until after the 2028 season.

Robinson will pass the 15-year milestone in 2027 – a year before his deal ends. The closest rival is Bob Fulton, who coached Manly over 13 seasons.

This season will be Robinson’s tenth year at Bondi, his grand tenure starting in 2013 with a premiership in his first year at the club.

“He is the full package,” said former Roosters champion, Anthony Minichiello.

“Trent knows the Roosters history and he educates every player that joins the club about that history and how the red, white and blue started.

“He has won three premierships along with how-many minor premierships. He will be a lifelong coach with us. It’s great news.”

Robinson is already the longest-serving coach in Roosters’ history. He has led his club in 233 games - 79 more than his closest coaching rival, Arthur ‘Pony’ Halloway.

When his new deal expires, Robinson will have burst through the 400-game barrier. That would be more than 150 matches clear of second-placed Halloway.

“In my view, Trent is the game’s best thinker. He is a man of high integrity with a genuine love for his players, the history of our club and the area we represent,” said Roosters chairman, Nick Politis.

“Every player that we have signed since Trent came on board as head coach in 2013 has become a better player and person and it’s wonderful to know that Trent will continue to lead the way at the Roosters well-into the future.”

Robinson claimed to be “proud” to have signed the new deal.

“This club has been the biggest part of my working life - it is unequivocally my home,” said Robinson.

“The Roosters are in my DNA, and as a leader, my role here is pretty clear. Walking into our offices every day, seeing the quality of staff and players we have here, we’re all committed to striving to be the best sporting franchise in Australia, and I’m incredibly proud to extend my time with the club.”

Robinson will turn 45 in a fortnight.

He will only be 51 years old when the new deal concludes – an age which may allow him to perhaps extend yet again.

Other legends to have coached the Roosters include Fulton, Arthur Beetson, Jack

Gibson, Don Furner, Ricky Stuart, Chris Anderson, Brad Fittler, Dave Brown and Graham Murray.
