Jake Turpin has become the latest Broncos player to ask for an immediate release as the out-of-favour hooker looks to reignite his flagging NRL career.
Just days after star prop Payne Haas stunned the Broncos by wanting out, only to backflip on his request on Monday following crisis talks, Turpin has followed his teammate’s lead by seeking an immediate transfer.
Unlike the Haas affair, the Broncos have granted Turpin permission to negotiate with rival clubs, with the 25-year-old having been linked with a possible mid-season move to Newcastle, who last month issued a lifeline to former Brisbane five-eighth Anthony Milford.

The Dolphins have also been touted as a possible home for Turpin but the NRL’s newest franchise has signed Bulldogs hooker Jeremy Marshall-King for 2023.
It is likely Turpin has played his final game for the Broncos, with the tough-as-nails rake having compiled 51 first-grade games for the club since his NRL debut in 2018.
Turpin’s request for a release caps a dramatic fall from grace for the former Storm hooker. He was named Brisbane’s most consistent player at last year’s club awards after amassing 22 games and tackling his heart out in a turbulent season that saw the Broncos finish 14th.
Turpin started this season at Brisbane’s first-choice hooker, but injury saw him ruled out of the Broncos’ round 7 clash against the Bulldogs and he hasn’t been able to break back into a winning side under Kevin Walters.
The Broncos have charged into the top four in Turpin’s absence, with Billy Walters and Cory Paix impressing in a shared hooking role to inspire Brisbane’s run of six consecutive wins.
The development comes just 24 hours after Brisbane upgraded the contract of teenager hooking sensation Blake Mozer until the end of 2025, another sign the off-contract Turpin was on borrowed time at Red Hill.
The classy Mozer is rated the next Cameron Smith.
Turpin has decided to be proactive in asking the Broncos for a release to cement his future elsewhere. The Broncos are happy to honour Turpin’s deal for the rest of the season but will not stand in his way if he is able to secure another deal in the NRL.
The Knights have been decimated by injuries this season and could be one option for Turpin after Newcastle handed a cut-price deal to his former Broncos teammate Milford.
