North Queensland Cowboys flyer Kyle Feldt destined for the back-row

ROOKIE winger Kyle Feldt could become North Queensland’s version of Luke Lewis and make a switch to the forwards.

ROOKIE Cowboys winger Kyle Feldt could become North Queensland’s version of Luke Lewis.

Having debuted for the Cowboys on the wing and made his name as a prolific tryscoring back in the under-20s competition, Feldt has been told by North Queensland coaching staff that his future almost certainly lies in the forward pack due to his imposing size.

At 21 he is already 102kg and as one of the fastest in the club over 40m Feldt could prove to be one of the most destructive ball runners in the future as he gets older and stronger.

“Personally I see myself as a centre and winger but I might push into the back-row as I get a bit older,” Feldt said.

“I’m a bit bigger than the average winger, all the coaching staff give me a bit of grief about it. We will find out whether they’re right in time.

“They just want me to try and maintain (my size) and they always just say to me that I’m going to end up in the back-row when I’m older.”

Feldt has turned heads with his two NRL games on the wing for the Cowboys, scoring a brilliant diving try on the end of a Johnathan Thurston kick last week to display the type of skills which made him an under-20s star for the past three seasons.

He has grasped his first grade opportunity with both hands, replacing the retiring Ashley Graham for the final few weeks of the season.

The Cowboys still hold a tiny glimmer of hope for the finals, but they must win every game to stand any chance including Saturday night against the Gold Coast. For Feldt, his focus is purely on building form to cement his NRL spot for the future.

“There’s a little bit of pressure knowing you’ve got to win the rest of the games for the year but we’re not really concentrating on the finals at the moment, we’re just trying to take it game by game just to get our form back for next year,” Feldt said.

“It’s always good to work on your form and personally I want to try and get my form up to scratch so I can try to cement a spot in the team next year.

“Next year is my last year (under contract) so we will see what happens and hopefully try to stay a bit longer.

“I’m enjoying my footy here and enjoying the club at the moment and it’s always good to enjoy your footy.”
