Manly Sea Eagles star David Williams to 'vigorously defend' charges of offensive behaviour and affray following alleged incident in Kings Cross

UPDATE: DAVID Williams, pictured training today, will defend charges stemming from an alleged bar incident, which took place while out with Andrew Johns.

MANLY Sea Eagles winger David Williams will vigorously defend charges of offensive behaviour and affray stemming from an alleged incident in Kings Cross.

Williams will face court in August following an altercation outside a Kellett Street nightclub in the early hours of Monday, May 27.

"The club has today been made aware of charges laid against Sea Eagles player David Williams," Manly said in a statement.

"The NRL Integrity Unit has been advised of the matter and Manly will also conduct its own internal inquiries.

"David denies any wrongdoing and will vigorously defend the charges.

"The club will not be making further comment at this time."

The police investigation followed a complaint by a 29-year-old Rockdale man that he had been assaulted.

It has been alleged that the man who made the complaint had been involved in an altercation with two other patrons after they were all ejected from the club.

It is understood that Williams’ teammate Justin Horo and Manly’s assistant coach Andrew Johns were also out on the night with Williams.

It is understood that Horo was also involved in the altercation but he was the victim.

There is no suggestion that either Horo or Johns have done anything wrong.

Williams was issued with the court attendance notice stating the charges yesterday and he will appear in court on August 13.

The Rockdale man has also been charged.

Meanwhile, the Sea Eagles say they will not turn Kings Cross into a 'no-go zone'.

Manly players were forbidden from frequenting Kings Cross under former coach Des Hasler due to the high likelihood of finding themselves in trouble.

Current coach Geoff Toovey said there were no plans to re-introduce the ban.

"There's no banned areas that we make here at Manly but they also know the consequences and the dangers in those areas," Toovey said.

"... if you make those hard and fast rules they're sure to be broken and then what do you do?

"The players are very aware of the scrutiny they come under, particularly when they go to foreign places away from their home.

"You've just got to be extra, extra careful when you're at those places."
