Kyle Feldt try-saver helps Cowboys down Titans in gutsy 6-4 win

The 2015 grand final hero had already racked up 148 running metres over 15 carries but found the strength to power 10 metres to his right and save the game for his North Queensland team.

In the end, North Queensland’s 6-4 win over Gold Coast came down to a matter of millimetres.

With the Titans trailing by two points and time up on the clock, NSW Origin hopeful Tyrone Peachey launched a last-ditch raid that split the Cowboys line and unlocked Brian Kelly down the left hand side side.

Enter Kyle Feldt.

The 2015 grand final hero had already racked up 148 running metres over 15 carries but found the strength to power 10 metres to his right and bundle Kelly past the left cornerpost into touch, sending the swarm of travelling Cowboys fans into raptures.

It was a suitably dramatic end to a match that opened with 12 consecutive sets and didn’t let off from there.

Both sides played out a frantic opening quarter with Jarrod Wallace inspiring a fast start from the Titans but the hosts couldn’t capitalise until a Jake Clifford penalty handed them prime field position in the 22nd minute.

Dale Copley needed just 30 seconds to score from there with the winger completing a slick team try involving five pairs of hands.

Points dried up from there with both sides butchering late chances but AJ Brimson came within spitting distance of Gold Coast’s second after his 50m dash was cut down by a flying Jordan Kahu.

Anthony Don was held up shortly after while Gideon Gela-Mosby was denied a soccering effort up the other end sparked by Kahu, who also produced a try-saving tackle on Brian Kelly just before the siren keeping the half-time margin to four points.

Jason Taumalolo emerged a different player in the second term and bagged North Queensland’s only try on 50 minutes in contentious circumstances.

The Tongan wrecking ball carried three Titans over the try-line and was deemed to have grassed the turf on a second effort.

Kahu’s conversion saw the Cowboys take a two-point advantage with half an hour remaining but the lead should’ve evaporated after a silly Feldt penalty handed Taylor a chance to equalise from 20m out.

Yet the million-dollar halfback’s nerve failed and the 11,226-strong bellowed as his shot sailed out to the right.

The drama wasn’t over there with Kevin Procter crossing for a potentially match-winning try in the 74th minute, only to be denied by the NRL Bunker.

Kurt Baptiste was put on report for a late shot on Tyrone Roberts in the same play but the five-eighth couldn’t equalise either from the tee, his shot shaving past the right upright with five minutes remaining.
