JOHNATHAN Thurston had every right to be cocky after leading the Cowboys to the third biggest comeback in NRL history in a 36-30 win against Parramatta on Monday night.

So after being interviewed post-game by a panel featuring Eels legend Nathan Hindmarsh on Monday Night with Matty Johns, the champion halfback signed off with: “Sorry about that one, Hindy.”

It drew rapturous laughter from the panel but Hindmarsh was far from pleased, demanding Thurston — who had walked away — continue the interview.

“Put the headphones back on. Get him back on, get him back on. I’ll smack him,” Hindmarsh said.

Thurston took up the offer, reappearing on screen with a huge smile on his face to receive the reply.

“Yeah you’re a w***er, mate,” said Hindmarsh, who played 330 games for Parramatta from 1998-2012.

Thurston continued the good-natured exchange by saying: “You know I love you, Hindy, you were my first roommate on Tour,” before Johns chipped in with, “What’s it like to win a grand final, JT?”

But just like he had on the field minutes earlier, Thurston had the last laugh.

“Ask Hindy,” he said.

Three tries in the space of six minutes from Gavin Cooper helped lift North Queensland to a miracle win and keep Thurston on track for a top-two finish and potential maiden premiership this season.

The Eels had powered their way to a 30-6 lead when Chris Sandow potted a penalty goal with just under half an hour remaining. But the visitors crossed for a stunning five tries in 11 minutes, equalling the third-biggest comeback in NRL history and extending their club record winning streak to 10.

The Eels looked headed for an easy win when Semi Radradra finished off a sensational 90-metre try that he began with an offload deep in his own territory.

Sandow kicked the lead out to 24 points in the 53rd minute before a Radradra mistake on tackle one allowed Matt Wright to dive over in the 57th.

From there the Cowboys ran in 24 unanswered points in quick succession, the first 12 of which came from Cooper pouncing on two similar Johnathan Thurston dinks into the in-goal.

The Cowboys second-rower nabbed his third when Will Hopoate spilt a Thurston bomb, and then he helped complete the comeback when he broke through the line and found a supporting Lachlan Coote, who kicked ahead for Kane Linnett in the 68th.
