‘It’s a proud moment’: Sea Eagles name Trbojevic as the club’s next captain

A new era at Manly is officially under way with a fan favourite named as the new Sea Eagles club captain months after contract drama.

Tom Trbojevic will lead Manly into the future after the local product was announced as the man to replace Daly Cherry-Evans as captain.

Just days after Cherry-Evans was unveiled in a Roosters jersey for the first time, the Sea Eagles settled on his successor in a move that will be popular on the northern beaches.

The Trbojevic name is synonymous with the Sea Eagles, with Tom and his brothers Jake and Ben part of the starting side that will be looking to bounce back after they missed out on the finals this year.

“Tom leads through his actions on and off the field,” Sea Eagles coach Anthony Seibold said.

“On the field he is an elite player who has a big influence on team performance.

“Off the field, not only is he highly respected by his teammates, but he is a highly regarded member of the Northern Beaches community.

“I know he’ll do a great job as captain.”

Trbojevic has played 170 games for the club since he made his debut a decade ago, with the superstar fullback signing a new deal just last month to extend his stay until the end of the 2027 season.

Life hasn’t always been easy for the former Dally M winner who has dealt with a stack of injuries throughout his career that led to suggestions he should stop playing fullback.

Manly experimented with that this year but Trbojevic returned to fullback and performed well.

A move to the Super League was on the cards before he eventually decided to stay, with Trbojevic to lead a team that will welcome back key forwards Haumole Olakau’atu and Taniela Paseka from injury.

But the biggest change will be at halfback, with Raiders veteran Jamal Fogarty the man tasked with replacing Cherry-Evans. The playmaker has already started training alongside his new captain.

“This means a lot to me, and I’m thrilled to take on the captaincy,” Trbojevic said, with Jake another leading option for the role.

“It’s a privilege and I feel very honoured to take on the role. It’s a proud moment.

“The next few months of pre-season will be tough but it’s an exciting time for all of us as we prepare for the new season.”
