Former NSW coach Brad Fittler has revealed he has a new job while praising the man who has taken over at Blues coach, Michael Maguire.
Fittler will be advising the NRL on ways to grow football participation and pathways.
“I’ve got a new role now so I’m working on that,” Fittler said.
Maguire was officially appointed NSW coach last week for two years although the NSWRL claim the deal was for “multiple” seasons.
Fittler quit after this year’s series loss when essentially offered a new contract spanning five months of the year.
“How they (NSWRL) make their decision to get a coach is up to them,” Fittler said. “But I think ‘Madge’ (Maguire) is a good appointment.
“He is strong with what he did with the Kiwis. He’s got a good reputation and I think he will do a good job.
“I’ve never been coached by him but watching when he was at South Sydney, and he had good players, I think manages to get the best out of them.”
Asked whether he had regrets over resigning, Fittler said: “Nup. How you go about making your decision is up to you but I agree with the appointment of Madge, I think it’s a good one.”
Fittler said he had not considered running for the vacant New Zealand job, relinquished by Maguire, and was now working at the NRL in participation.
“I haven’t thought about it (the Kiwi position). Isn’t Wayne Bennett getting that?” Fittler said.
Fittler presented New Zealand’s James Fisher-Harris with the Golden Boot award at a function at the NRL on Wednesday morning.
