State of Origin 2016: Jarryd Hayne could play for Blues, Newtown Jets could provide the launch pad

NSW coach Laurie Daley admits Jarryd Hayne could be considered for State of Origin — and foundation club Newtown are ready to help clear a path.

Blues fans would clearly love to see Hayne return in time to face Queensland.

NSW Blues coach Laurie Daley has made the stunning admission that Jarryd Hayne could be considered for State of Origin this year.

And The Daily Telegraph can reveal that foundation club Newtown are ready to help clear a path for Hayne’s Origin return by officially registering the former NFL star.

Hayne could know within the next week whether he has successfully forced his way into Fiji’s Sevens squad for the Rio Olympics after quitting the San Francisco 49ers early Monday morning.

Blues fans would clearly love to see Hayne return in time to face Queensland.

The chance of having Hayne back for Origin — possibly in games II and III — will excite every Blues fans.

Daley wouldn’t guarantee Hayne would be chosen — should he become available — but was in no doubt the ex-superstar fullback would be heavily considered tor help win back Origin supremacy from Queensland.

Daley told The Daily Telegraph: “Who knows, Jarryd might be back here in a couple of weeks time. If he’s here, fit and available, we would certainly look at him for Origin II or III.

“You never say never in terms of what may or may not happen. There could injuries or suspensions, you just never know. He’s a guy who has certainly proven he can do the impossible.

“He’s obviously decided on playing Rugby Sevens at the moment but you wouldn’t say no to coming back to State of Origin this year if things don’t work out. I won’t dismiss anything at the moment. Jarryd Hayne is a great player.”

Daley hopes Hayne returns to rugby league.

Laurie Daley knows what Hayne would mean to NSW’s origin hopes.

“He’s a mighty talent, one of the best we have seen,’’ Daley said. “He’d be a good pick-up for someone. It would be nice to see him back sooner rather than later.

“He’s only 28, Jarryd has plenty of footy in front of him. All clubs would be trying to fit him into their rosters. They would be queuing up. He is a phenomenal athlete who can achieve whatever he sets his mind to.”

Hayne would have to be registered with a club to be considered for Origin — and the Newtown Jets are ready to help.

Told of the development, NSWRL chief executive David Trodden added: “Provided Jarryd had all the appropriate clearances, there would be no reason not to register him.”

A Parramatta legend, Hayne could make the unbelievable shift from Levi Stadium in California to Marrickville’s Henson Park.

“We would register him instantly,” said Newtown director Terry Rowney. “To qualify for State of Origin, he would have to play for a NSW Cup side or an NRL team.

“Gee, he’s a talent, he’d be very welcome. The process would be if Jarryd indicated he was fine to start with us, we would have to draw up a contract and he’d be registered with the Newtown Rugby League Football Club.

“We would leave no stone unturned to make this happen. He is such a fantastic player, he’s outstanding. He would go on a very important list of players who have worn the royal blue. If he’s available, we’ll find a royal blue jumper that would fit him.”

Daley said he was surprised that Hayne had left the NFL.

“I was surprised because I thought he was well on his way to a good career with the San Francisco 49ers. Obviously things have changed,” Daley said.

“Jarryd is a guy who has always challenged himself. Time is against him getting ready for the Sevens. But it would be another achievement if he made the side for the Olympics. He would be one of the few athletes to achieve that.”
