WE’RE not sure who will be stung the most. Wests Tigers, NSW or Australia?

An aggravated left ankle injury sustained against Newcastle on Sunday will push Wests Tigers skipper Aaron Woods onto the sidelines for between four to six weeks.

It is a terrible blow for Wests Tigers, already struggling after four successive losses.

With Woods absent, Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor will opt for Chris Lawrence and Dene Halatau as his new co-captains ahead of former skipper Robbie Farah.

The injury will also mean Woods is unavailable for selection in Australia’s one-off Test side to play New Zealand at Newcastle on May 6.

And should his ankle take the full six weeks to mend, Woods would then be in serious doubt for NSW in State of Origin I on June 1.

A six-week recovery would mean Woods would have to be chosen for Origin I without having played a game since last Sunday. Woods is hoping though to be back in Round 10 which would have him fit and pumped for Origin I in Sydney.

The Wests Tigers cult figure hobbled off in Sunday’s 18-16 loss to Newcastle at Hunter Stadium.

“It is a blow - we are definitely going to miss him,” Taylor told The Daily Telegraph.

“He’s been leading the way for us this year and playing long minutes too.

“It’s going to test us. We have to think long and hard about how we’re going to replace him but we’ll come up with a way and we’ll be ready to go on Sunday (against Melbourne at Leichhardt). He should be in the Australian team and the Origin team because of the work he does with us. He deserves it so it’s disappointing for all of us.

“I’d be quietly confident he should be back by Origin.”

The injury won’t however lead to a captaincy return for Farah.

“We have Chris Lawrence and Dene Halatau as his vice-captains so they’ll jump over,” Taylor said.

“They’ll toss a coin as to who tosses the coin and both play leadership roles.”
