LEAGUE CENTRAL TV: Martin Taupau’s hit shows the flaws in the NRL judiciary, Laurie Daley says there needs to be an overhaul of the system.

EVERYONE is talking about the Marty Taupau charge at the judiciary and whether the grading and suspension fit the crime.

Taupau’s high hit on Cronulla’s Jack Bird was deemed by many to be serious enough to warrant at least two or three weeks out.

Speaking on League Central TV’s Loz & Dog Show, NSW Origin coach Laurie Daley said the system itself is what needs to be overhauled, rather than focusing on how each individual case is handled.

“I think the bigger issue is the ratings and loadings we have in the judiciary system, there needs to be an overhaul,” Daley said.

“We’re finding players are spending a week on sidelines for relatively minor offences, whereas someone with a clean record may come in and do something that we all assume will be a four or a five week penalty but because of that clean record he only gets a week or two.

“Most of the coaches who I speak to privately agree that each charge should be about what you’ve done in the that particular moment rather than whether you have a good record or two previous offences. There’s less confusion that way and it’s easier to understand.”
