AS JOSH McGuire’s new born fought for his life in a spider’s web of cords and breathing tubes the Broncos prop realised how inconsequential missing a grand final actually was.

“I would rather go through another Achilles than go through that again,” McGuire told The Courier-Mail.

McGuire plays his first NRL game in eight months on Thursday night against Parramatta when he returns from the Achilles that ruled him out of Brisbane’s grand final heartbreak.

McGuire opened up to The Courier-Mail about two of the most harrowing days of his life when new born son Maxon was struggling in intensive care last Friday and Saturday.

Maxon had fluid on his lungs and couldn’t breathe after birth with the McGuire family naturally fearing the worst.

Thankfully, Maxon and mother Tanyssa have pulled through and are now doing well.

For McGuire it was a frightening reminder of what is really important.

“He couldn’t get a breath there on the first day and he was on machine with a lot of cords,” McGuire said.

“Thankfully he’s OK. There was fluid on his lungs.

“It was touch and go there. He was in Intensive Care Unit for a couple of days.

“He’s a strong little fella though.

“He’s good now and the club was great in sending a lot of well wishes.

“I wouldn’t want to go through that again.

“Mum and bub are doing well so we are happy.

“That’s life and it throws curve balls at you.”

McGuire was still his typical wisecracking self at Broncos training on Monday, joking about Wayne Bennett’s inevitable extension with Brisbane.

“He is killing it at the moment. He’s making cash and banking cheques,” he said.

“I love playing under Wayne. He’s a good man and a good coach.”

McGuire was impressive in Brisbane’s win over Wigan last week playing almost 60 minutes.

It was his first match since snapping his Achilles against Newcastle in June last year.

“I feel just as fit and I haven’t lost any speed,” McGuire said.

“I am a little bit lighter. I am down to 103 or 104 kilos at the moment. I was around 106 and 107 kilos last year.

“We are hungry as a playing group. To get all the way there and not take that final step was heartbreaking.”
