HERE it is Dragons fans, the first time former NRL star Anthony Mundine has worn a Saints jumper for 16 long years.
Mundine sensationally quit St George Illawarra — and rugby league — midway though 2000 to pursue a boxing career. He hasn’t pulled on the famous Red V since the day he left.
That was until Thursday when ‘Choc’ met up with good friend Gosh Daher, also known in league circles as the Phantom Siren.
Despite still chasing more boxing success, Mundine continues to discuss a return to rugby league in 2018, aged 43. That would seem unlikely but, then again, most didn’t believe Mundine would capture four boxing world titles.
“People say it’s impossible until somebody makes it possible and I’m about making things possible,” Mundine said.
“In 2018 I want do the impossible and prove I can still compete at the highest level, not only compete but be one of the best five-eighths playing. I truly believe in my talent and have the experience from the past to call on.
“My body isn’t beat up. I feel my body in rugby league years is 24-25, the age when I left. Everybody laughed when I quit footy and said I’m gonna be world champ and everyone will laugh again now.
“They talk about age — age don’t define me.
“I’ll speak to the Dragons about the Nines then have a couple first grade trial games, hopefully the Charity Shield. Then we will really know if it’s possible or impossible but I ain’t gonna die wondering.”
Daher wants his mate to return — and he just may start performing the phantom siren once again.
“Since Mundine left Saints 16 years ago, we haven’t had any halves that have made me sit on the edge of my seat,” Daher said. “The kid was special and, being a close mate, he’s got my support. ‘Choc’ puts bums on seats. I promise you he can make it back to rugby league.”
