Brisbane have officially launched their bid to extend the career of Adam Reynolds after tabling a one-year deal for the veteran playmaker.
Reynolds, off contract at the end of the season, will celebrate his 300th game in first grade this weekend when the Broncos play bitter rivals the Gold Coast.
He now looks set to extend his career for at least one more season as the Broncos look to ward off interest from Sydney, where the Wests Tigers have expressed an interest in handing Reynolds a lifeline.
Reynolds’ priority has always been to strike a deal with Brisbane and this masthead understands that the Broncos have now shown their hand after offering a one-year deal that would see him extend his first grade career into a 15th season.
It comes as the Broncos reel from their sixth defeat in their past seven games heading into Reynolds’ milestone match against the Titans at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.
The Broncos have planned a week of festivities to help Reynolds celebrate his landmark but the most significant might be the news that he now has an offer on the table to play on next year.
Only last week, his agent Steve Gillis said Reynolds’ priority was to stay in Brisbane and continue his career.
“Unless a deal can’t be done at Brisbane, there’ll be no further conversations with anyone,” Gillis said.
“It’s not a bidding war, it’s not about seeing who comes up with the biggest offer. The Tigers aren’t the only club we’ve had a conversation with.
“I’ve had chats with a couple of clubs saying if he doesn’t stay and he wants to play on, we may engage in a chat. But we’re trying to do a deal with Brisbane.
“Adam wants to finish his career at Brisbane, his kids are settled there, so that’s what we are working towards.”
Gillis said talks with the Broncos have been promising, with Reynolds keen to stay loyal after Brisbane’s $2.4 million lifeline following his contract bust-up at South Sydney.
“Adam is a world-class player, but one of his options could also be to retire depending on how he feels,” Gillis said.
“I’ve had discussions but I won’t go into details about what has or hasn’t been tabled. We’re having ongoing discussions, I’ve met with the Broncos twice in the past week, so conversations are taking place.”
