Scenes got heated after full-time in the Melbourne Storm’s 36-28 win over the Newcastle Knights on Sunday afternoon.

In a wild, high-scoring match, the Storm outlasted a late comeback from the Knights to hang on to move on top of the ladder.

But at full-time, Knights halfback Jackson Hastings and Storm lock Trent Loiero got into a heated stoush.

“We saw some scenes at the end of this game. Things boiled over for the Knights halfback Jackson Hastings,” Lara Pitt said on Fox League.

“There were obviously frustrations for both sides,” Corey Parker added.

“We see Jackson Hastings right in the thick of it with Trent Loiero.

“No surprise to see, both players play with their heart on their sleeve and you see Hastings there pointing the finger.”

It’s unknown what led to the incident.

Hastings is no stranger to heated clashes though, having been “shirt-fronted” by former Wests Tigers teammate Tommy Talau in a match last year that saw David Klemmer step in.

But it’s hard to blame Hastings for any frustration after the Knights were arguably the better team for long stretches of the match.

And yet the Knights, who led 12-6 two minutes from halftime, went to the break down 18-12 after two tries in two minutes right before the break.

The Storm then ran away with the result to lead 34-16 before the Knights responded late to cut the lead to six points with four minutes remaining.

Knights coach Adam O’Brien said he felt his side got the short end of the stick in the match with plenty of penalties and six agains on their own line.

“I thought we were dealt with really harshly, a really harsh standard across the 80 minutes,” O’Brien said.

“It just felt like … how lopsided it was. There’s no doubt at time we pushed the envelope but it was a harsh standard.”

Storm coach Craig Bellamy wasn’t too pleased either despite his side going back to the top of the ladder.

“I’m glad we won obviously,” Bellamy said.

“They made a lot of line breaks through our middle, which was really disappointing.

“The game could’ve gone either way.

“I was just disappointed with some of our defence at times.”
