Anthony Minichiello fights on as new Warrior Sam Tomkins joins the NRL fray

VETERAN Rooster Anthony Minichiello and boom UK recruit Sam Tomkins face very different challenges in the 2014 season.

ONE is starting his first year in the NRL, the other readying himself for his final season.

New Warriors star Sam Tomkins revealed his 2014 plans to The Daily Telegraph yesterday at the same time another inspirational fullback, Anthony Minichiello, announced he had signed on for another 12 months at Bondi.

Tomkins was Super League's best player, attracting comparisons to Billy Slater.

But he was humble and forthcoming yesterday, saying: "There will be expectations. That always happens to a new player at a new club.

"I'm not daft enough to think I can sneak under the radar.

"I'll have to get straight in to it. That's what I signed up for. It's going to be a big challenge and it's something I'm looking forward to.

"The NRL wasn't something I had ambitions to play since I was a kid, but over the past few years I have thought about.

"In the past 12 months I said to my agent that I wanted to play NRL.

"I'm expecting it to be consistently hard week in, week out. There is a lot more media, excitement and publicity."

As Tomkins arrives, Minichiello, 33, is preparing for his 15th and final year in the NRL.

It has been a spectacular career, capped off by leading Sydney Roosters to this year's premiership.

Salary cap debate and Minichiello's World Cup campaign with Italy delayed the process.

There will be times next season when winger Roger Tuivasa-Sheck plays fullback, with Minichiello moving to the wing. but retaining the captaincy.

"My heart is and always will be with the Roosters" said Minichiello.

"The 2013 season was so special for everyone and, as a player, I can't think of a prouder moment than lifting the Provan-Summons trophy. There's a strong bond among our players and I'm really excited that I'll again lead the boys for another season."

"He has an incredible work ethic and I'm really pleased that his experience will continue to benefit the team around him."

Minicheillo has played 275 first grade games to be the second most capped player in the club's history.
