Adam Doueihi in the clear with Wests Tigers over LGBTQ+ criticism

Wests Tigers star Adam Doueihi has copped plenty of criticism over his social media post labelling LGBTQ+ inclusion as ‘embarrassing’ – but he’s in the clear with his club.

The Wests Tigers won’t be taking any further action against a “remorseful” Adam Doueihi after the star five-eighth made a controversial comment on a social media post supporting the inclusion of LGBTQ+ athletes and supporters in sport.

Doueihi left the comment “embarrassing” under a post on the English Premier League’s Instagram account that included prompts on how to “speak about LGBTQ+ inclusion”.

The club issued Doueihi a please explain on Sunday to discuss the comment.

It’s understood Doueihi explained to club officials the comment was not directly aimed at the LGBTQ+ community but the Premier League’s post itself for trying to dictate what could be said about the issue.

A club official told this masthead that Doueihi is remorseful that the comment way taken the wrong way.

“It wasn’t Adam’s intention to hurt anyone. We’ve spoken to him and no further action will be taken.

“The club is committed to being an inclusive place for all, we welcome people of all parts of society to be part of our club. Our mission statement as a club is to enrich lives of community and that we are all inclusive.”

The NRL’s integrity unit is also not involved in the matter.

Doueihi, a devout Christian, has deleted the comment, which drew 9,000 likes after it was posted.

The Premier League’s post was part of the Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces Campaign, which is an annual event in support of LGBTQ+ community and diversity initiatives.

Conceding the comment could have been taken as being disparaging towards the LGBTQ+ community, Doueihi deleted the comment.

It’s not the first time Doueihi has voiced an opinion in such matters.

In October, the 25-year old was vocal in his support of the right of Catholic schools to teach religious beliefs after students at St Ursula’s College in Kingsgrove fought to reverse a policy that prevents them from bringing a same-sex partner to the year 12 formal.

At the time, Doueihi told 2GB’s Chris O’Keefe that he wasn’t aiming “hate towards anyone” but was speaking out against the way the Christian faith “being mocked so badly in society” and called out those who “stay quiet, and not speak up and defend Catholics”.

Doueihi is currently sidelined and recovering from his third ACL injury, which he suffered in April. Doueihi will miss the opening month of 2024 but could be fit enough to return as soon as May next year.
